Overview

Mill End Hotel is set on the banks of Devon's River Teign on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay praises it as a "relaxed country-house hotel with lovely food, open fires and great walking all around".

This 15th-century property was once a mill and the restored 18-foot water wheel is powered by an aqueduct on Dartmoor.

The restaurant uses local ingredients, including fish from the Cornish coast, locally reared meat, and fresh vegetables. The bottled water is produced in-house, using a 7-stage filtration and purification system. There is a continental breakfast buffet and a selection of hot breakfast dishes cooked to order. Expect to see dishes such as whipped Cornish brie with spiced carrot salad and truffle honey, ale-braised beef cheek with rösti potato and celeriac purée, and treacle tart with rhubarb, honeycomb and clotted cream. Or try the selection of West Country cheeses with biscuits, grapes and quince jelly.

The hotel has 15 individually styled bedrooms and the décor is traditional with neutral calming colours. Standard Double rooms are on the first and second floor, and some have views of the gardens or direct access to a private patio with a garden.

There's a small bar for pre-dinner drinks, with comfy lounges with log fires and views of the riverside gardens.

The hotel owns a short stretch of the River Teign so keen anglers can go fishing (supplements apply). Well-behaved dogs are also allowed at the hotel (supplements apply).

Location and closeness to Chagford and Moor walks

Room a bit dated but comfortable. It did not help with radiator problems but staff put in an electric heater and contacted plumber. I think a little soft music in the dining room would help a bit especially as it was quite quiet with only 3 other tables occupied.

Everything was lovely. Staff were attentive without being intrusive. The lounges with the open fire was a home from home but better. The food was delicious.

One minor criticism, on arrival our room had a slight get doggy smell. But this did disappate quickly.
