Built in 1891, Najeti Hôtel Château Tilques is a Neoclassical county manor in northern France, a 35-minute drive from Calais's ferry and Eurotunnel connections to the UK. The picturesque grounds, which are dotted with modern sculptures, have a lake and a resident peacock.

The hotel is surrounded by the Marais Audomarois biosphere reserve, a UNESCO-recognised region of canals and wetlands, and is 10 minutes' drive from St Omer, a historic Flemish town with a Gothic cathedral and plenty of restaurants and bars. The town was founded in the ninth century, and later became the base for the British Royal Flying Corps during World War I. La Coupole, a V2 rocket base in World War II, is 15 minutes away by car. It has a museum, where you can visit the chilly tunnels and learn about the local area during the war, and a planetarium.

Le Vert Mesnil, the hotel's restaurant, is listed in The Michelin Guide. The hotel also has a heated indoor swimming pool (open from 7:30am-10:30pm), a tennis court and a bowling green. You can also hire bikes to explore the local area.

Charm Rooms are "immaculately and individually decorated and furnished in classical French style" (Daily Mirror). Wi-Fi is free.

He hotel was remarkable in a lovely situation just badly managed and didn’t pay enough attention to detail..

First impression was, wow. But then due to under staffing the service was horrendous. First night’s Dinner and the service was excellent but then due to many guests in the restaurant that is when u went wrong. Disarterus, due to lack of staff, after waiting over an hour for the first course, omitting the aperitif, then the second course was cold , we had to send it back another long wait!! Very uncomfortable atmosphere. The carpet in the bedroom we complained because it was absolutely stained in fact needing changing. I did speak to the Hse keeper, but still no change. We liked the place but breakfast, after 9.30 no Plates, no butter, no bread and just bits of left overa and lack of service. Not what you would expect from an expensive, quality hotel. Plus walking around the lake, champagne bottles left around and scattered rubbish, in our opinion the management need to spend more time in sting attention to detail. Otherwise a beautiful hotel.

Good location if you're looking for a quick break in France, only about 30 mins from Calais. Good amenities with a tennis court and good size swimming pool.

Despite the weather, it was a great place to stay. Staff and service very good. Restaurant meal and breakfast very good with excellent service. The grounds are beautiful and restful. The room was a bit shabby but comfortable.

The only points I would make are that areas of the Château were not clean I.e. stairs. We changed from Charme room as it was up four flights of stairs which I could not manage easily. The room itself was fine for the price. The swimming pool and surrounding was fine but the entrance foot pool was dirty. Lastly, the baguettes at breakfast were of the frozen type which seems a shame when used in the land of the fresh and tasty baguette from the local bakery. Considering the breakfast was very good, this rather let it down. Having said all of this, we had a very nice and comfortable stay.

We originally stayed at this hotel probably 20 years ago. As on all our visit, dinner was of a high standard, and this time probably it was the best - our compliments to the chef!

However, on this visit, we found the room, 29 , a "charm room - a misnomer ! It was on the second floor, up 4 flights of stair....surely a hotel of this class should have long ago installed a lift to this floor. I am 79, severely sight impaired, & my wife is 74 - we found it very hard going! Even worse, the room was small, in the eves, such that I could not walk to my bedside table without hitting my head on the sloping ceiling- to get into bed, I had to shuffle sideways, head bent! The room just was not big enough to take a double bed...with a single, it would have been adequate. On previous visits, we have stayed in lovely rooms, but this one was totally inadequate - it should be converted to a single room, but totally fails as a double....and "charm" it certainly was not!

Staff very helpful & mainly spoke good English. Our room was very comfortable with beautiful view across the lawn. Would have loved a fridge & kettle with tea/coffee facilities. The pool was a delight & we had it to ourselves on both occasions then lay on the loungers in the sunshine watching the baby peacocks. Breakfast was lovely & we had an evening meal in the restaurant which was quite pricey but excellent.
