The Hotel du Vin chain has built up quite the reputation for high-quality boutique hotels with a French twist, and its York property is no exception. With “luxury and quality that will cosset even the most discerning guest” (The AA Hotel Guide), the hotel is housed in a Grade II-listed Georgian building in the Mount area of York, which was once the city’s local orphanage.
Today, it’s an excellent choice for leisure and business travellers alike. You’ll be staying within an easy 10-minute walk from the train station and old city walls, and it’s a 20-minute stroll to the Shambles and York Minster Cathedral.
Back at the hotel, the grand staircase and shadowy nooks and crannies to explore are reminiscent of the building’s heritage, but it’s been beautifully renovated and modernised throughout. The on-site Bistro du Vin has wooden floors, dark wood and a racing theme, and has been awarded an AA Rosette for its French fare with a British twist. Try the moules frites, roast rump of lamb and beef bourguignon on the bone, washed down with something from the impressive leather-bound wine list.
Afternoon tea is also served from 3-5pm, and there’s a lazy brunch buffet every Sunday from 12pm, including seafood, pâtés and artisan bread, as well as the more traditional roast dishes. During the rest of the week, breakfast is an impressive spread of cooked dishes such as eggs benedict, crȇpes and soft-boiled eggs, yoghurts, fruit, pastries and cereal. There’s also a cigar room and bar, although drinks here are a little on the pricey side.
Upstairs, the sleek rooms feature hand-sprung mattresses, Egyptian linen, oversized rain showers and more of that traditional décor. Standard Rooms can be a little on the small side, so an upgrade is recommended. The suites are particularly impressive – each is named after a Champagne label and have roll top baths. The jewel in the crown is the Moet Vintage Collection Suite on the top floor, with its 8-foot bed, DVD players, double monsoon shower and twin roll top baths. Bose surround sound and two large flat-screen TVs. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
