Overview

The Elms Hotel & Spa is set in a manor house built in 1710, in 10 acres of grounds. It's an hour's drive from Birmingham, and around 15 minutes from the Wyre Forest Nature Reserve, where you'll find many walking trails and Go Ape, a high-wire treetop challenge. Witley Court and Gardens is less than 10 minutes' drive, and the West Midland Safari Park and Severn Valley Steam Railway are less than 30 minutes' drive.

At the hotel, there is a croquet lawn, tennis courts, a tree swing and a trail to follow around the gardens. Many of the herbs, vegetables and fruit used in the restaurant are grown here, and the greenhouse has more exotic plants, including Venus flytraps. The spa is free to use and has a sauna, a steam room, an ice fountain and a thermal suite, plus there's an indoor pool and a hydro pool that is half indoors and half outdoors.

Bedrooms are furnished in a country-house style. Most are in the main house but there are six in a modern annexe. Wi-Fi is free. Some rooms are dog friendly by prior arrangement for £15 per night.

On Sunday mornings, there's a breakfast club where little ones are looked after by nursery staff to give parents a much-needed lie-in. Later on, the Garden Café serves a relaxed menu all day, including a high tea for children each afternoon. Little ones are also welcome in the Library Bar, which is cosy with an open fire and dark wood. The Brookes restaurant is adults-only in the evenings, but has an early sitting for children.

Families are more than welcome here -- there is an Ofsted-registered crèche offering guests a free 2-hour session per day, outdoor play areas to explore, early dinner times and tailored menus. Mums and dads are well looked after, too, with adults-only dinners in the restaurant. Older children will be taken with the Xboxes, the air-hockey machine and the DVD library in the games room.

Cold in dining room. January. Had to remind them I'd requested a dog friendly room when I booked via travelzoo.

Food was good but main courses would benefit from being a little hotter when served.

Friendly staff, beautiful building, good food, nice spa and a huge Christmas tree! Everyone was really friendly and the place seems very relaxing. Had a really good massage too.
Other Comments
The dining room could have done with some music to create a little more atmosphere at dinner as it was all a bit quiet with only 2 other couples staying. Also, putting a table in the middle of the room would make it seem a little less sparse. Also, the bedside light could have done with a switch on the cord so you didn't have to reach right out of bed and still struggle to turn it off. Really enjoyed playing with Bella the dog :-)

A bit of a curate's egg; some things excellent (especially provision for children) some things only OK.

Staff were very helpful under difficult circumstances.
Other Comments
Food was very disappointing and the hotel itself is tired. especially the carpets to the rooms as extensivly stained. The gardens were overgrown and unkempt, nothing like the photo on their website. We understand this is a family friendly hotel, but to have children in the pool naked without bathing costumes leads to a health risk.
