"As a member of the IHG group I was expecting some perks that most Hotel members provide without even asking for. In this case the Hotel provided NOTHING! (Not even the common room upgrade) Therefore, it is not a good Hotel for IHG member in that respect. In particular since there are other IHG Hotels in the area! Note: This is NOT a reflexion on Travelzoo is just between me and the Hotel. Thanks!"

Overview

Two -- some would say three -- San Francisco icons are at the doorstep of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. The first is Union Square, “one of [the city’s] main retail and cultural centers” (SFGate.com) with department stores, major fashion houses and glitzy restaurants. The second is the Powell Street cable car, which runs right in front of the hotel on its journey down to Market Street or up to posh Nob Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf beyond.

The third icon is the hotel’s own doormen, nicknamed Beefeaters, who dress in red-and-gold-fringed regalia taken from the hotel’s 1920s English roots. The lobby soars in marble and wood paneling up to barrel-vaulted ceilings dripping in chandeliers. Farther up on the 21st floor is the Starlight Room, wrapped in windows with a 180-degree panorama of the bay, hosting nightclub acts and Sunday brunch drag shows. Starlight Room will be temporarily closed June-September 2019.

The rooms, refreshed as part of a US$9 million renovation completed in January 2019, are rich with oversized jacquard prints, bold injections of color, sleek lacquered furniture and oblique reframes of royal portraits. Updated bathrooms and modernized elevators were also part of the project. All hotel guests get free morning coffee and tea and admission to the wine hour in the lobby from 5-6 p.m. with complimentary pours.

Reservations are recommended at the on-site Scala's Bistro. The bustling tourist magnet also draws in local crowds for its Old World ambiance and rustic Italian and French eats.

location was great, almost right on the union square.

at checkout, the clerk refused to give me a final bill. she said she already gave it to travelzoo and i'm not part of the transaction. that's ridiculous because she charged my card directly for the room, not through travelzoo. sure enough, the next day we found she charged us some $8 for reason unknown to us, but i decided not to pursue for the small amount. no other hotel had ever refused. dishonest!

because I'd never heard of the Sir Frances Drake before I thought it was the St. Francis Hotel due to it's address on Powell St and half a block for Sutter St. It was confusing and I think the Sir Francis Drake could reduce it by mentioning that they are located between Post and Sutter. They offered 2 complimentary drinks but as we had tickets to BBB the evening we were staying and don't know the city real well, we decided to walk to the theater, enjoy talking around and having dinner before the show. We planned to take a cable car back to the hotel but never saw one so we didn't get back to the hotel until about 11:00. As it was pretty late we thought we'd get a mimosa or Bailey's with breakfast in hte morning. As they have a restaurant we didn't think to ask what time the bar closed in the morning. We got there at 10:10am and were told we could only have breakfast. That sounds as though they intentionally make it difficult to get your complimentary drink. That was disappointing .

It was positive. No complaints at all except perhaps that the coffee bar was taken down very early.

The location was the best feature. Just out the door and get a cable car. I hadn't taken a cable car for over 50 years when I lived on Bush St.

The restaurant Scala’s attached to hotel was delicious!

The room and bathroom were very small and the old building and windows made for a noisy night. The lobby was worn and door man was of no help.

We had a great time and the Travelzoo deal we received was a great value.

The staff is wonderful. The only negative was when we went to look at the fitness center. There was a member of the staff who discouraged us from entering because she was cleaning while there was clearly someone working out in the facility. It put us off from using the fitness center.

This deal provided even more than was advertised--six free cocktails for three nights instead of two. The parking is overpriced but there's a garage a block away with in-out privileges at half the price. It's really a great old-fashioned big-city hotel right by Union Square.

Rooms so small; bathroom impossible to use if you’re a larger person. Toilet wedged between sink and door.
