Two -- some would say three -- San Francisco icons are at the doorstep of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. The first is Union Square, “one of [the city’s] main retail and cultural centers” (SFGate.com) with department stores, major fashion houses and glitzy restaurants. The second is the Powell Street cable car, which runs right in front of the hotel on its journey down to Market Street or up to posh Nob Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf beyond.

The third icon is the hotel’s own doormen, nicknamed Beefeaters, who dress in red-and-gold-fringed regalia taken from the hotel’s 1920s English roots. The lobby soars in marble and wood paneling up to barrel-vaulted ceilings dripping in chandeliers. Farther up on the 21st floor is the Starlight Room, wrapped in windows with a 180-degree panorama of the bay, hosting nightclub acts and Sunday brunch drag shows. Starlight Room will be temporarily closed June-September 2019.

The rooms, refreshed as part of a US$9 million renovation completed in January 2019, are rich with oversized jacquard prints, bold injections of color, sleek lacquered furniture and oblique reframes of royal portraits. Updated bathrooms and modernized elevators were also part of the project. All hotel guests get free morning coffee and tea and admission to the wine hour in the lobby from 5-6 p.m. with complimentary pours.

Reservations are recommended at the on-site Scala's Bistro. The bustling tourist magnet also draws in local crowds for its Old World ambiance and rustic Italian and French eats.

I tried to add a night to our stay but was told there is no TZ deal. I checked back with hotel directly and paid less.

Loved the historical atmosphere and decor of the hotel and yet the furnishings and bathroom and carpeting were "new" or in good condition. Great staff. Fabulous location.

Great Travelzoo deal. Very friendly staff. Great service at Front Desk. Let us check-in early. When the room they assigned us wasn't ready (undergoing maintenance work), they gave us a complimentary continental breakfast for our trouble. Only negative was the mouse we saw in the breakfast area (Scala's Bistro).

the bed had a throw pillow on it that was filthy. the bartenders at the lobby bar were not very friendly and slow to respond. The room was fine but there was a vibration in the wall, maybe the next door AC that hummed all night and made it very hard to sleep. Nice architecture but not great for a stay over

The price was deceptive regarding the facility fee. We were charged tho the info said we would not be charged at ll. Parking was way more expensive then we were told. It should have been no more than $62.00 not taxed. We were charged $91.00 No in room coffee available. the front desk would not split the bill for us.

location was great, almost right on the union square.

at checkout, the clerk refused to give me a final bill. she said she already gave it to travelzoo and i'm not part of the transaction. that's ridiculous because she charged my card directly for the room, not through travelzoo. sure enough, the next day we found she charged us some $8 for reason unknown to us, but i decided not to pursue for the small amount. no other hotel had ever refused. dishonest!

As a member of the IHG group I was expecting some perks that most Hotel members provide without even asking for. In this case the Hotel provided NOTHING! (Not even the common room upgrade) Therefore, it is not a good Hotel for IHG member in that respect. In particular since there are other IHG Hotels in the area! Note: This is NOT a reflexion on Travelzoo is just between me and the Hotel. Thanks!
