Two -- some would say three -- San Francisco icons are at the doorstep of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. The first is Union Square, “one of [the city’s] main retail and cultural centers” (SFGate.com) with department stores, major fashion houses and glitzy restaurants. The second is the Powell Street cable car, which runs right in front of the hotel on its journey down to Market Street or up to posh Nob Hill and Fisherman’s Wharf beyond.

The third icon is the hotel’s own doormen, nicknamed Beefeaters, who dress in red-and-gold-fringed regalia taken from the hotel’s English roots from the 1920s. The lobby soars in marble and wood paneling up to barrel-vaulted ceilings dripping in chandeliers. Farther up on the 21st floor is the Starlight Room, wrapped in windows with a 180-degree panorama of the bay, hosting nightclub acts and Sunday brunch drag shows. The Starlight Room is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings.

The rooms are more modern majesty, with oversize jacquard prints, bold injections of color, sleek black lacquered furniture and oblique reframes of royal portraits. All hotel guests get free morning coffee and tea and admission to the wine hour in the lobby from 5-6pm with complimentary pours.

Reservations are recommended at the on-site Scala's Bistro. The bustling tourist magnet also draws in local crowds for its old-world ambiance and rustic Italian and French eats.

The bathroom was very small - a large person could not have fit on the toilet.

Had to wait for check in until almost 4 pm. My son was not feeling well and was not good to have to wait.

It was comfortable and once again Kimpton went above and beyond to help us have a great say in the city. The lobby was a beautiful inviting meeting place for the rest of the group we came with. Good walking distance to the theater and little Italy. Good food, coffee and wine at the hotel.

The beauty of a grand old hotel with an extremely good job of decor and function in a relatively small room. Enjoyed the wine in the mezzanine and especially enjoyed meals at LaScalla It was a treat.

The windows are clearly single-paned because we could hear everything from the street despite being on the 14th floor. The windows should probably be replaced.

Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, comfortable beds, excellent restaurant. Consistent quality and service across the board.

The computer system on the elevator could use some maintenance. I figured out that you needed to look at the number on the actual elevator floor to make sure you were exiting at the right place. It would be confusing if you relied solely on the digital display in the car which didn't always match.

Great & easy stay. Very convenient to almost all aspects of San Francisco. The hotel itself is pleasant, contemporary pieces in a classic environment. SF has an issue with an overflow of vagrants and homeless folks around the area; the Drake did a decent job maintaining a safe environment, despite a few of them visiting the lobby every now and then. Rooms are small - but not unfortunate. If you're coming to relax and lay in your room for hours and hours, this isn't the hotel for you. We needed a nice, comfortable space to sleep and night while seeing all the SF sights. This hotel was perfect for us.

Make sure, if you have a room credit (i.e. $20 per day), you must use it PER DAY. This is not cumulative. You also must report every charge as you use it, or else you'll miss the credit. They do not do a good job of keeping up on charges & credits...you must do this yourself.
