Why We Love It
This historic retreat is on the banks of the River Trent
A Norman mill tower that is almost 1000 years old forms part of the hotel building
The Peak District National Park is 45 minutes' drive away
Overview
The Priest House Hotel is a historic property in a picturesque riverside setting in rural Derbyshire. The main hotel building incorporates a Norman mill tower dating back to the 11th century.
Located on the River banks of the Trent, The Priest House Hotel is a 5-minute drive from the small market town of Castle Donington. The town has a museum, and although the castle that gave the town its name is no longer standing, the original church remains.
Other local attractions include Calke Park National Nature Reserve and National Trust property Calke Abbey, which are both around 20 minutes' drive away. The city of Derby is also 20 minutes' drive away, while Nottingham takes 30 minutes. The Peak District National Park and Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are both around 45 minutes' drive away.
Some of the bedrooms are in cottages just over a small bridge across the river. They were built in the 17th century and have original fireplaces and beamed ceilings. Executive Double Rooms are modern and larger than cottage bedrooms, and are in the main hotel building. Some have views of the River Trent.
The hotel has a fine-dining restaurant, and its Millstream Bar & Terrace (which was refurbished in 2016) serves less formal fare and traditional afternoon tea.

Room phone wasn't working, so went to reception to book a table for dinner at 8pm. Arrived at 8 and there was no tables available. Had to wait until 8.40 before being shown to a table and noticed that there were many tables available. Ordered 2 steak meals and a bottle of wine at 8.45. Arrived at 9.20. Not good service. The following day went to breakfast at 9.15am and had to wait for a table. Again there were tables available, but not cleared. It was 9.30 before we were seated. Not good. The problem is the number of staff . The personnel there were very good, but run off their feet. They needed someone else to clear and reset the tables.

Hotel let's itself down on lack of attention to detail. Wine bottle unopened by waitress @ dinner. No tea spoons on table @ breakfast. Salt and pepper empty. Fruit juice glasses not on table or with juices. A bottle of bubbly serves to guests in the bar had to be opened by the guest. Little things that could make a big improvement. Staff training needed!!!

The room was lovely but short on hanging space, especially as most of the coat hangers were missing. We asked reception for replacements and they brought an assortment of hangers none of which slotted into the fittings on the hanging rail. We did manage to use them in a fashion, but we were surprised that such a lovely hotel didn't have enough coat hangers. It didn't spoil our stay though - just a minor inconvenience.

We did find the service in the bar restaurant quite slow (although it didn't worry us as we had lots of time) it would have been a problem for anyone wanting a quick meal. Some staff were obviously new and learning the job. On our second morning at breakfast the staff were obviously stressed as some other members of staff had called in sick. This meant they were short and seemed disorganised ( one member of the team had already been on duty from 11 o'clock the night before). None the less, staff were all pleasant and were working to ensure the clients had what they needed. All in all a really lovely break.

Organisation of breakfast on our second day was chaotic. Not enough chairs for all guests, buffet table not replenished; no serving spoons and the wait for food was endless for some people. The first morning was good for breakfast, but we were disappointed with dinner. It was expensive and the cooking did not live up to the price and our expectations. The food in the restaurant proved to be a slight disappointment. Good quality but not quite up to scratch. I sent back the peppercorn sauce which was thin and flavourless and my medium steak was quite rare-I didn't mind that too much as I enjoy a rare steak from time to time. My husband ordered Prawn and Chorizo tagliatelle which had five lovely prawns on the top but none at all throughout the pasta which was loaded with oil from the chorizo. Such a pity because the setting was perfect. We ate out on the second evening of our stay.

On arrival a young lady was on reception, she was very curtious & polite. We came back later as our room wasn't ready due to arriving early which was not a problem but the receptionist later who's name was Carole was very formal. Our safe in the room wasn't working so you would expect someone to come & have a look, but Carole said there was no one who knew about safes but didn't call anyone else to sort the problem during our stay. The staff worked very hard in the bar and restaurant

Just one small downside for us in that at our Saturday breakfast agency staff were used and although they were clearly trying their best it was at times a little chaotic. We know this was due to two weddings which were taking place that weekend making them short staffed. The food was lovely though.

The Restaurant. The food is described as fine dining and priced accordingly. Disappointing and nothing special. we found the food to be bland and tasteless at dinner and breakfast. I felt sorry for the waiting staff on the Saturday (8th April). It was obvious to all a lack of consideration had been given to the number of patrons booked for dinner. One member of staff for the majority of the evening.
Breakfast, the following morning, was poor. Poor service and poor food - Poached Haddock served with Poached egg on toast. Bland, 'watery' and more than a fair share of bones...
Overall, the quality of the food let's the place down as does the limited menu.

The location and its proximity to interesting places and the lovely views.
The staff were really attentive and well turned out.

The decor is a bit tired in places, and scuff marks on walls indicate a need to use a paint brush from time to time. The heating system in the room was sporadic, and not programmed very well - I did discuss this with reception.
It would be lovely if there were a residents' lounge with pretty views over the river, just a nice place to relax on a sofa with an open fire and the ability to read a book and relax in a lovely hotel.

A real shame that dogs are not permitted in the bar area, given the hotel's geographical situation and outside space. More furniture (sofas / winged chairs and tables) as you enter as really rather empty and a little soulless. Could be really lovely.
