Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is set in 300 acres of rolling countryside on the border of Essex and Suffolk. The hotel grounds were developed from a 120-acre apple farm within the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an area made famous by the paintings of one of 19th-century England's foremost landscape artists, John Constable.
This family-run hotel is a member of the Classic British Hotels collection. It has a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant that serves modern British cuisine and has scenic views over the lakes and golf courses. The AA Hotel Guide 2018 praises the "superb" spa, which has facilities including a heated indoor pool, a sanarium, a steam room and a Jacuzzi (use of the spa and pool facilities is included from 2pm on the day of arrival until 11am on the day of departure). There are also two 18-hole golf courses, and the on-site Pippin Shop is a treasure trove of handmade gifts, food and wine.
You will find plenty to do in the local area. Historic Colchester is 25 minutes' drive, and Ipswich is 35 minutes' drive away. Gainsborough's House -- a museum and gallery in Sudbury paying homage to English painter Thomas Gainsborough -- is less than 20 minutes' drive away, as is the medieval village of Lavenham. Colchester Zoo is a 30-minute drive away.
