The hotel is just off both the B1068 and the A134, and Bures railway station is a 15-minute drive away. Colchester Station is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, and services are more frequent here than at Bures. Parking is free.
Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa is set in 300 acres of rolling countryside on the border of Essex and Suffolk. The hotel grounds were developed from a 120-acre apple farm within the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an area made famous by the paintings of one of 19th-century England's foremost landscape artists, John Constable.
This family-run hotel is a member of the Classic British Hotels collection. It has a 2-AA-Rosette restaurant that serves modern British cuisine and has scenic views over the lakes and golf courses. The AA Hotel Guide 2017 praises the "superb" spa, which has facilities including a heated indoor pool, a sanarium, a steam room and a Jacuzzi (use of the spa and pool facilities is included from 2pm on the day of arrival until 11am on the day of departure). There are also two 18-hole golf courses, and the on-site Pippin Shop is a treasure trove of handmade gifts, food and wine.
You will find plenty to do in the local area. Historic Colchester is 25 minutes' drive, and Ipswich is 35 minutes' drive away. Gainsborough's House -- a museum and gallery in Sudbury paying homage to English painter Thomas Gainsborough -- is less than 20 minutes' drive away, as is the medieval village of Lavenham. Colchester Zoo is a 30-minute drive away.

Bar food only so so, and breakfast slightly chaotic, but staff very nice and helpful (especially reception). Nice to get newspapers delivered to our room which was some way from reception.

Great friendly and attentive staff. I had a broken ankle and was using a wheelchair for distance and they couldn't be more helpful to me.

Couple of things could be different. No bottled water in the room and the sound on the TV was a bit dodgy. The lift to the spa and pool which was mainly for staff but used for disabled access could have been freshened up but on the whole we had a great stay We had a travelzoo booking which we made on the Thursday. I broke my ankle on the Saturday and we were due to go in the Tuesday. I called to enquire about accessibility and they couldn't have been more helpful moving us to a bigger room with handles etc

Ideally for peoples over 50, not many things to do if you are not golf players.
Love the pool & spa. Food is average standard. Staff are friendly. Room is clean.
