It’s “colour blocking gone wild” (Conde Nast Traveller) at the Saguaro in Scottsdale, where retro style was pulled into the modern age with a 2011 renovation. This town was a celebrity haven in the 1950s and '60s, and the hotel offers a heaping spoonful of that poolside-beneath-the-palm-trees languorous glamour.

Vibrant primary colours spill over accent walls, across furniture and into the weave of handcrafted Mexican textiles in guest rooms, which have vintage issues of Arizona Highways magazine and sliding glass doors leading to a balcony or patio facing the city or pools. The mod rooms are decked out with flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations and organic bath products. Hallways here are open-air walkways.

The hotel’s restaurant offers an American bistro concept, serving locally sourced seasonal dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu offers salads, flatbreads and entrees, as well as an extensive tequila list, a variety of wines and handcrafted cocktails. A small coffee kiosk serves up specialty coffees and pastries in the mornings.

In the courtyard are two pools. Upbeat music pulses around the main one, which has lounge chairs, day beds and more of a festive atmosphere. Things get calmer at the second pool, which is tucked to one side in a grove of palm trees, where the splashing of a concrete waterfall is a perfect soundtrack for frittering away an afternoon beneath the sunshine. This is definitely the place for the trendy 20- to 30-something set who want a pool party scene rather than a family-focused affair.

Spa treatments take inspiration -- and ingredients -- from the Southwest desert. Prickly pear sugar scrubs feet, margarita salt exfoliates hands, chilies and Mexican chocolate envelope the skin and chaparral and yucca detoxify the body.

Love the ambience, colors, and cool vibe. The tacos at the pool were delicious! Loved my breakfast Sunday morning at La Senora. The friendliest and helpful staff. Best of all the great summer rate and drink beverage credit!!!

The rooms do not have queen beds, only doubles. The AC does not work properly. Our room was 86 degrees even with the air being set at 60 for hours. We experienced some very poor customer service several times, but ended with great customer service at the end with our room and breakfast being taken care of by the hotel. They admitted 3rd floor rooms don’t get cool in the summer which is not acceptable for a hotel.

The pool was nice and for the most part kid free which was great for a girls trip.

We had two rooms both on the 3rd floor. Late July heat of 114’ outside and one of our rooms a/c went out. By 11:00pm when we got back it was 86’ in our room and absolutely miserable!!! Our second room with the A/C set as low as possible would only get down to a sweaty stale 78’(the manager Adrain told us that the 3rd floor in the summer never cooled below 78’(seriously disappointing for a hotel, we should be comfortable!) With our first room at 86’ we called front desk the first thing they said was “well we can just cancel you if you don’t want to stay in there. There’s other hotels around.” Excuse me, it’s 11:00 at night, and your only response is for us to leave!?! We asked for a fan(which we seen 3 at the front desk bc their AC was also out that day) “no we don’t do fans here”. Yea okay you have 3 on you as we speak but your totally more important than your guests. We asked for maintenance to come check it out, they don’t have maintenance at night. As a last resort we decided that we would all cram into the other room with our friends at 78’ with 1 cot(2would have been a fire hazard they said and refused us another one) and one of our guests had to sleep on the floor(where I had earlier killed two small bugs). 78’ wouldn’t seem so bad if it weren’t a small room with stale air and no fan, with 2exterior walls. The whole night was miserable, one of our friends was over heated and got sick and ended up leaving in the middle of the night. The front desk staff was rude, we were told to “just cancel” by 3 different people that day. The managed Hardy and Adrian were both very helpful and did make things right by comping both rooms. We did appreciate their help. Overall I’d never stay there again, especially if the temp outside is higher than you want your room to be.

They failed to give me credit for my $ 30 food & beverage credit. On check-in, door would not lock. Then they had to replace refrigerator.

This is a fun retro hotel in a great location. The personnel were friendly and professional. Our only suggestion would be to add another mirror to the rooms.
