Rooms & Rates
Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island is a modern skyscraper in Wan Chai, a 15-minute journey by Star Ferry or MTR from the mainland. The Hong Kong Island location is best suited to travellers looking for an authentic experience, but it’s good for business travellers, too -- two stops on the MTR from the central business district and 20 minutes on foot from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Described by Lonely Planet as "a seat of culture, a showcase of dying age-old traditions and a nightlife guru", Wan Chai is a place of contrasts and Hotel Indigo sits right at the crossroads between old and new. Across the street lies the Old Wan Chai Post Office and the Blue House Cluster, crumbling buildings from a bygone age. Just up the road you can shop for snacks and souvenirs at Wan Chai market, or soak up the sounds of haggling locals at the flea market on Tai Yuen Street. Venture a couple of blocks further north and you'll find the bars and clubs on Lockhart Road, the hub of expat nightlife. It’s a 25-minute stroll to the Admiralty area, where you can take the funicular to the top of Victoria Peak, which affords panoramic views over the city. Happy Valley racecourse is a 5-minute drive away.
Cantilevered out from the 29th floor, the dramatic glass-bottomed pool is an "exciting draw", says Condé Nast Traveller. The skybar on the same floor is a quiet spot for an evening cocktail and has its own small terrace if you want to sit outside. The hotel's restaurant, Café Post, is a casual eatery that's open all day long for dim sum, noodles and Western dishes. It sources ingredients locally and the coffee is reputed to be the best in the neighbourhood -- it "will have you hooked", claims Fodor's.
Rooms are spacious by Hong Kong standards and feel very modern -- rainfall showers are hidden behind opaque glass and there are electric blinds at the floor-to-ceiling windows. Each has a directory detailing the history of the area, with recommendations about local sights and restaurants. Rooms to the rear have views over the lower slopes of Victoria Peak; upgrade to a corner room on one of the upper floors for the best vistas.
