Penventon Park Hotel is set down a tranquil avenue of trees and subtropical palms in the market town of Redruth, a major centre of Cornwall's tin-mining industry during the 19th century.

Heartlands, a free cultural centre within UNESCO's Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World-Heritage Site, is approximately 10 minutes' drive away. It has 19 acres to explore, with exhibitions, sensory gardens and a giant adventure playground.

The National Trust's Godrevy Beach is around 25 minutes' drive away. This sandy beach with high cliffs and dramatic coves is great for walkers. You may spot basking sharks, dolphins, porpoises and the large grey seal colony.

Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and Portreath beach are within 20 minutes' drive of the hotel, while the seaside resorts of Carbis Bay and Saint Ives are approximately 25 minutes' drive away.

Pendennis Castle, an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII between 1540 and 1542, is 40 minutes' drive.

The hotel's restaurant uses local seafood and meat cooked in the signature wood-charcoal oven, Bertha. The restaurant's décor is ornate, with antique frames, art collections, a grandfather clock and opulent dark walls.

Gin connoisseurs will be in their element in the Georgian Gin Bar, which has over 140 gins.

Rooms are individually designed and highlight original Georgian features with a contemporary twist.

Facilities at the hotel include a health spa with a swimming pool, a gym, a sauna, a Jacuzzi and a solarium.

Enjoyed Most: Our room was very good in a new wing of the hotel. Paying the extra upgrade to a junior suite was a good decision. The hotel has a very nice restaurant
Other Comments: Hotel is nicely positioned as a base to explore West Cornwall. Redruth itself seems a bit rundown with little to offer in the evenings.
