The Falcon Inn is a 4-star B&B in the Gloucestershire countryside that's received both an AA Breakfast and AA Dinner Award. It is in the picturesque town of Painswick, known as "The Queen of the Costwolds", which is an 18-minute drive from Gloucester.
The stone-built property, which previously spent over 200 years in use as a town courthouse, dates back to 1554. It overlooks Painswick's St Mary's Church, famous for its legendary 99 yew trees (100 trees now flourish there, despite the long-held parish belief the devil would have a field day if an extra tree were planted). Its scenic rural location -- on the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile footpath that runs along the Cotswold Edge – makes it popular with both hikers and horseracing fans, as it is also a 31-minute drive from Cheltenham Racecourse.
The AA describes the Falcon's bar and dining area as having a "charming atmosphere". The restaurant serves bistro-style dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, made using locally sourced ingredients. The menu features dishes such as braised rump of lamb, grilled fillets of mackerel and beef tomatoes stuffed with Mediterranean vegetables. The Good Pub Guide says The Falcon Inn is also "worth a visit" for its "friendly young staff", and especially recommends the "four well-kept beers, including Sharps Doom Bar".
According to the AA, the B&B's 11 bedrooms are "all individually designed and well equipped, with comfortable beds, crisp white linen and very good-quality toiletries". Each bedroom has tea- and coffee-making facilities and Freeview television, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
