Lainston House Hotel is a quintessential country-house retreat in Hampshire, complete with a croquet lawn, a kitchen garden, birds of prey and its own heliport. The 17th-century building is set at the end of a long country lane, approached by a mile-long avenue of lime trees, with the surrounding courtyard framed by archways and loggias and draped in ivy. There's also a 12th-century chapel ruin and a pretty dovecote within the 63 acres of its surrounding parkland.
If you wish to explore the nearby Hampshire countryside, you can drive to the city of Winchester, which is 12 minutes away by car, or to Southampton, which is a 28-minute drive. But there's also plenty to do within the hotel grounds – you can fish, play tennis, try clay-pigeon shooting or falconry, follow a walking trail, use the gym or cycle along the country lanes on a tandem bike.
The intimate 3-AA-Rosette Avenue Restaurant has fabulous views of the avenue of lime trees, and serves locally sourced produce, much of it from the hotel's own gardens. For special occasions, there's an 8-course tasting menu with innovative dishes and á la carte dishes such as Monte Enebro (citrus-flavoured goat's cheese with leek, red onion, cep and cider jelly) and halibut with beet quinoa, cashew and pomello. Try an afternoon tea served in the Drawing Room, or out on the terrace when the weather is fine.
You can also visit the Cedar Bar for evening drinks -- it has a cosy fire, leather armchairs and ornate panelling made from a cedar tree that fell in the grounds in 1930. The bar creates a cocktail of the month each month using liqueurs distilled with fruits from the Kitchen Garden Orchard, which also hosts informal barbecues that are popular with guests during summer months.
The 50 bedrooms are each individually designed. Guestrooms come with a handmade bed, while Junior Suites and Suites have an extra quirky feature, from a split-level room to a 4-poster bed.
