In Japantown, The Buchanan's location has a residential feel -- out of the touristy hustle and bustle of Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf, but still close to major attractions.
It has affordable rates for San Francisco and provides good all-around value. There complimentary morning coffee & tea service, hosted wine hour and free loaner bikes to explore the city. Kimpton hotels are pet-friendly, so guests can bring their animals along.
The hotel faces out over the main pedestrian street in Japantown, which leads down to Yoshiro Taniguchi’s Peace Pagoda and the Japan Center. It’s a vibrant center of Japanese culture in California, crammed with kimono stores, sushi bars and a traditional Japanese bath house. The area is not far from the bars and restaurants on Fillmore Street, sandwiched between the main tourist sights and the business district. Guests can borrow a custom-designed PUBLIC bicycle to explore town.
On-site restaurant Mums is famed for its shabu-shabu; take turns cooking your own meal at the table by dipping meat and vegetables into boiling broth and seasoning with dipping sauces. The all-you-can-eat menu is served all day, plus there’s all-you-can-drink beer and sake (5-10 p.m.). In the mornings, breakfast is a mix of miso soup, rice balls and pickles, as well as pancakes and omelets. There’s also a fitness room that’s small, but not cramped.
