A stylish 4-star property with an excellent location, Malmaison Mancheser is "the city's sexiest rock 'n' roll hotel", says Elle UK. It occupies a renovated 19th-century textile warehouse, just one block from Piccadilly train station and is a 5-minute walk from the trendy coffee shops, restaurants and bars of the Northern Quarter. It is 20 minutes on foot from the Manchester Arena.
Described by Rough Guides as "Britain's new cultural capital", Manchester has no shortage of museums and galleries. Good options include the Imperial War Museum North on the Quays and the Neoclassical-style Elizabeth Gaskell's House in Ardwick, which is a half-hour stroll from the hotel and was home to the author of Cranford and Wives and Daughters.
The hotel's Smoak Bar & Grill holds an AA Rosette and dishes up grilled lobster, burgers and oak-smoked steaks -- diners can select their preferred cut from the dedicated steak fridge. Breakfast is a continental buffet, and guests can upgrade to a full English breakfast, which is cooked to order. The hotel's bar has a buzzy atmosphere, and offers a menu of coffees, cocktails, bar snacks and sandwiches throughout the day. The hotel also has a spa and a gym.
With moody lighting and heavy drapes, even the Standard bedrooms and Cosy Doubles are glamorous hideaways. Opt for a Super Suite for a touch of drama -- choose between the Moulin Rouge, with a 4-poster bed and an enormous bathtub, Romeo and Juliet, with its mini staircase, and the Theatre, which has a Bose sound system. All rooms offer free Wi-Fi.
