Why We Love This Hotel

  • Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is in the rural Sussex village of Rusper
  • This 17th-century country house hotel is set in more than 40 acres of grounds and has a private lake
  • The restaurant has an AA Rosette

"Very enjoyable but forgot it was right next to Gatwick airport and the rooms have no double glazing so there's no sleeping after 6.0am. Better to visit in winter when you don't need the window open!"

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and the National Trust's Wakehurst Place are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as tempura-battered king prawns and confit chicken leg.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

Highly recommended. Lots of aeroplanes flying overhead, but this was not a problem for us. We loved our stay there.

We had an ok time, room was fine but very few toiletries provided. Hard to find barman for predinner drink. Our main meals were ok although the Asian pork would have been over cooked for some. The creme brûlée was tasteless and had the weirdest texture I have ever had on such a dessert and could not not eat it, which no one questioned. However could not fault the breakfast.

Arrived and free upgrade to suite. Had to duck as low beams in the main house but room was excellent. Included meal was excellent quality on first night. Good attentive staff and well kept gardens.

Need to be aware hotel is very close to Gatwick and plane noise is very apparent. Shame the WiFi was not available during our stay.

once we found the hotel we were delighted with our accommodation and welcome from the staff - the room certainly was SUPERIOR with magnificent view of the gardens. The offer from Travelzoo was very good value.
Other Comments
The evening dinner was a disappointment - the crab pate was pretty uninspiring and the fish we had was vastly over-salted - it was our fault as we should really have complained but we were very tired. The cheese platter was good but not overly frond of small wafer thin biscuits. Staff slightly over attentive. Breakfast was fine.

Had a very enjoyable visit here. Food was excellent and the staff friendly. Lovely old building with beautiful gardens. Just a shame the noise from the planes woke us up early. But I would go back plus earplugs . Great value for money.
