Why We Love This Hotel

  • Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is in the rural Sussex village of Rusper
  • This 17th-century country house hotel is set in more than 40 acres of grounds and has a private lake
  • The restaurant has an AA Rosette

Ghyll Manor Hotel & Restaurant is a converted 17th-century timber-framed manor house in Rusper, a small village in West Sussex. It's set in over 40 acres of gardens with a private lake, a terrace with a dais and an old amphitheatre. Inside, vintage and contemporary features include original beams and modern furniture.

Rusper, in the district of Horsham, has a village shop, a park, public tennis courts and two pubs. There are many walking routes nearby, including the 150-mile Sussex Border Path, which runs along Rusper High Street. Nutbourne Vineyards, Arundel Castle and the National Trust's Wakehurst Place are all within 40 minutes' drive of the hotel.

Brighton, with its famous shopping area The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and Victorian seafront, is around 40 minutes' drive away, and the cathedral city of Chichester is within an hour's drive.

Guests can have drinks and afternoon tea in the conservatory or the Terrace Room, which has a large patio overlooking the gardens. The AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant serves classic dishes such as tempura-battered king prawns and confit chicken leg.

There are 29 rooms, all with free Wi-Fi. Standard and Superior Rooms are in the modern Stable Mews in the grounds.

Note: the hotel is eight miles from Gatwick Airport, so there might be some aircraft noise.

The location was superb.
Other Comments
The staff in the main were apathetic but the breakfast restaurant staff on both days it has to be said were much more engaged. However, the evening restaurant staff were very disengaged abrupt and I would not recommend this hotel for that reason. The room we had, had very tired décor the carpet was worn and bedding stained. not the usual Travelzoo experience

Other Comments
The rooms were very dated/tired looking. The bathroom was dated and shabby, no grout in tiles, shower run hot and cold, shower head only half way up wall. Service was poor, waited half hour for coffee after meal then gave up. Nobody behind bar to serve drink, looked for staff on reception but nobody there either. Poor choice of food in restaurant. Definitely not 4 star.

We loved the Mahogany room.
Other Comments
We felt the menu was a bit lacking in choice and we both opted for the whole plaice, thinking this was the best alternative. It should have come with purple sprouting broccoli but it ended up being plain broccoli and very very al dente. Had this not been in a good deal I think I would have said something . Breakfast however was good and plenty of it . Having said all that the staff were great and it wouldn’t stop me coming again but only on a deal !

Your receptionist was exceptionally helpful when , upon checking in, my husband realised that he had lost his wallet. Thankfully it was returned to us from the Garden Centre which we had visited on our journey to the hotel.
