The family-owned Kings Courtyard Inn is an intimate Greek Revival-style property with a pretty façade and a warm, romantic atmosphere. The inn dates back to the 19th century and retains a historic elegance with high ceilings, hardwood flooring and painted columns. Three courtyards make for a pleasant summertime retreat, and Waterfront Park -- great for sunset views -- is only four blocks to the east.
Charleston was voted the top city in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure readers for the third year in a row in 2015, and if you’re planning to explore, the downtown district (where the hotel is located) is the best place to start. The restored Charleston City Market and the Gibbes Museum of Art are a block away, and the ferry terminal for boat trips to Fort Sumter is within walking distance (25 minutes). Don’t miss a ride on the free CARTA trolleys -- the three loops cover most of the town, and there’s a stop near the hotel.
This historic inn is strictly a bed-and-breakfast, so facilities are limited. The hotel does, however, provide free extras, including morning coffee, a daily cheese and wine reception (5-6pm), and a sherry tasting in the lobby. A continental breakfast can be delivered to your room (on request), or taken in the breakfast room or in one of the courtyards.
Rooms are quaint, with authentic wooden floors, period-style furniture, patterned curtains and oriental rugs. Pricier rooms and suites have canopy beds and fireplaces for added romance.
