Overview

The Royal Exeter Hotel is a stately Victorian property in Bournemouth town centre, five minutes' walk from the beach. It was once home to Lewis Tregonwell, a naval captain charged with defending the coastline around Bournemouth from smugglers and invaders.

Bournemouth has a "glorious 7-mile strip of soft sand" and a number of "hip hideaways" to visit, says Lonely Planet, and there's an abundance of things to see and do, including Bournemouth Gardens and Oceanarium: The Bournemouth Aquarium, which are both five minutes' walk from the hotel. You can also catch a show at the Bournemouth International Centre, which is directly opposite the hotel.

Bar So serves food and drink throughout the day, and mixologists make bespoke, seasonal and classic cocktails. The newly refurbished 1812 Restaurant & Bar serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The hotel has 54 bedrooms, all with free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service. There's also a small gym.

Front desk and waiting staff were all very friendly and professional. We had a problem with our room ( upgraded to a King before arriving but were checked into a double) Quickly dealt with by charming front desk staff who gave us keys to 2 other rooms to choose a room with a larger bed.

Food was excellent in the evening and hot breakfast in the morning was cooked to order rather than the usual buffets which are nearly always cold and disappointing!

The hotel staff were very friendly and polite it’s is very clean and tidy however I felt that the bedrooms need updating the walls are very thin so you can hear everything. The evening meal was very good and the breakfast was great . As for would I stay there again the answer would probably be know due to the bedrooms but this is a personal choice

Difficult to judge out of season as very few guests about. We felt the rooms, especially bar and restaurant, were a bit cold. Not a very good bathroom as shower head not fully working, and nowhere to put anything around the basin. Bed was very comfortable.

The restaurant was excellent. We had two very good dinners and breakfasts.

Other Comments
This was our third visit to Royal Exeter, booked through Travelzoo, and previous visits had been excellent hence our return. This time the room looked shabby and there was no bedside table on one side. If this was a superior room their standards have dropped considerably. I did raise this with staff and was told all rooms are superior rooms, I’m quite sure this isn’t the case, the rooms on previous visits were much better. . He did offer to find an alternative but for one night it wasn’t worth moving. On previous visits we have enjoyed dinner in the restaurant but this was closed for refurbishment as was the bar, we hadn’t realised when booking. The bar SO wasn’t really a suitable alternative but we did use it. It seems they are upgrading the areas which can be used by non residents but have no plans to improve the guest rooms. Such a pity as our this was our favourite hotel in Bournemouth.
