Overview

Hip, funky and affordable, the Basecamp Hotel is a boutique addition to the South Lake Tahoe scene. The hotel is just a five-minute stroll to the Heavenly Gondola lifts and to the lake where guests get free access to the private Lakeside Beach. There are big-name casinos just across the road, and Heavenly Mountain Resort is also a five-minute walk away, where you’ll find restaurants, a cinema and an outdoor ice rink (November-April). In warmer months, there’s hiking in the Desolation Wilderness or on the Lam Watah Trail, and golf at the nearby Bijou Park and Zephyr Cove Park courses.

Complimentary continental breakfast is served daily in the Beer Garden, and s’mores are also available on Fridays and Saturdays on the Lobby Deck from 7-9 p.m. During summer months, the hotel offers rooftop yoga at 9 a.m. every Sunday through Labour Day (mats provided). "Happy Camper Hour" is available every day from 4-6 p.m. It is a family-friendly take on happy hour, featuring camp-themed games and complimentary snacks in the summer and a gourmet hot chocolate bar in the winter. Regular happy hour still takes place daily in the Beer Garden with live music every night, which includes a selection of craft beer as well as brews from South of North Brewing Co., the on-site brewery open daily from 2-10 p.m.

Cabin-style rooms have an outdoorsy theme -- think tent stakes for gear racks, tarpaulins hung behind the bed as a headboard and camping motifs on the shower curtains. Fridges are provided and there’s a mini cooler box filled with ice to keep drinks chilled. Most rooms don’t have air conditioning, though they do provide fans (this is not uncommon in Lake Tahoe), and there are no elevators, so request a room on the ground floor if you have mobility issues.

The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The location of the hotel was excellent. Our room was clean and comfortable. Couldn't ask for more! The only negative I would mention is that the grassy/firepit area shown in the ad does not exist. There is an area with many more firepits and chairs, and a couple of outdoor games, but the area is covered in bark. Not as attractive, but enjoyable.

Space is well done, location is walkable.

Staff all seemed new and poorly trained. House keeping would come into room without knocking.

Basecamp was an interesting place. We loved all the open space, the fire pits available anytime. There was live music most nights, which was nice!

We were told we asked for a 'animal-friendly' room, which we did not. We don't have a pet. We were told we still had to take the room. I did not being stuck in the part of the hotel used for pet owners. I would have hoped they would have seen their mistake and worked harder at getting us a room not in the pet area. We were there in an off season , during the middle of the week (3 nights). ...

Nice clean rooms but very small. Looks like a recent remodel. The desk people were fantastic. The breakfast was boring.

Outside area is wonderful!

The bed was soft.
Other Comments
Lack of enough hot water to take a shower or even wash my face; loud music coming from the so-called beer garden until 10 pm; a breakfast "buffet" that failed to include any kind of meat, hot food, or juice; a breakfast room that was being simultaneously blasted with loud music and the sound of a TV show.
