My husband and I went to Hawaii to celebrate our 9 year anniversary. We traveled all across the Big Island and for our last 2 days stayed at the Fairmont Orchid and were looking forward to relaxing and recharging on the tail end of our trip. The resort itself is beautiful and the food was good. You are about 20-30 mins away from doing anything that is not on the resort, so important to take that into account for travel activities.
Regarding our rest and relaxation, unfortunately our room was located right next to where they were doing some construction (lots of drilling in the early morning and in the afternoon on both days we stayed at the resort) and they had large carts outside in the hallway. This was esp frustrating bc around 2pm, I had to vacate the pool area where there were a group of kids playing loudly in the pool. Totally fine for them to splash around, they are on vacation too, but when I go to my room to nap it should be quiet there - and it wasn't!
When I mentioned it to the woman as I checked out at the front desk, she proceeded to tell me that construction was only happening on another floor, not my own so I shouldn't have heard it, and then said that someone should have told me about the construction when I checked in (they did not tell me). Then she said she would have to look into it since it wasn't supposed to happen on our floor. When I reiterated that it was happening on our floor and that I saw the carts in the hallway, she said sorry and nothing else while printing out my bill. Based on the quality of the hotel, I would have expected more of an apology. I would have settled for an acknowledgement that having drilling happening can be disruptive and oh gosh, you should have told us, we would have relocated your room. Maybe offering a credit or a water bottle or something but didn't receive anything. She didn't believe me when I first brought it up. Overall it was a disappointing experience, especially given how kind and happy she sounded speaking with the gentleman who checked out before me. I am not sure I would stay here again in the future, given how many wonderful places there are to stay in Kona.

Customer service goes a long way. Most of the people we interacted with at the Fairmont Orchid were lovely and so helpful. It's a shame that the end of our trip was made sour by someone who didn't attempt to address a poor experience.

The Fairmont Orchid is in a beautiful location on the Kohala Coast. From check-in to check-out we had an amazing time. The staff and grounds were amazing. Our room was wonderful. We got the Oceanview King and it was exactly that. Great sunsets and a view of the koi pond with a waterfall. I would definitely book this deal again!

We had a great time at the Fairmont Orchid. This was our first time at the hotel during the Christmas season, and it was a very festive atmosphere. The hotel and resort grounds are lovely and well maintained, especially the pool. Fair warning that the restaurants at the resort are very expensive, which is typical for the Kohala Coast resorts in general.

The rooms are not up to Fairmont standards. My room floor was dirty, and the furniture was very dated. The mattress definitely needed replacing - it creaked very loudly anytime I sat or moved. The bathroom was fine, but dated. Housekeeping was very inconsistent - besides the cleanliness issue, there were days when they would leave no coffee, one day they left no hand towels, and I found someone else's swimsuit hung behind the bathroom door. The prices were very high - I had dinner at the "small plate" Asian restaurant, and the bill for two appetizer-size items and two drinks was over $100.

The fairmont orchid never disappoints. It’s by far the most intimate of the upscale, Kohala coast resorts and it’s both by design, and due in enormous part to the staff who treat every guest like royalty.

We’ve been frequenting the orchid since 2007, and it gets better and better with every visit. The grounds are absolutely stunning, the staff are the kindest, most attentive and generous, the primary restaurants are outstanding, (phenomenal sushi at binchotan and excellent food for omnivores and vegans alike at Brown’s Beach House. The daily musicians are all excellent too, especially Nino and Duke. And Barbie, the quality manager is simply the loveliest person ever! She goes out of her way to make the guests feel like million dollar clients!

Many activities were offered and we enjoyed a hula lesson given my a lovely Hawaiian lady who shared stories of the history of hula, giving us a whole new appreciation for this beautiful art. The food was ok and a bit pricy. Drinks were expensive ($20 - $28). We took the hotel shuttle to the grocery store and stocked up on a few simple things. Also expored the Mauna Lani next door which was easy to access vis a 15 minute footpath or the shuttle.

Our reservation was for an ocean view room and we were given a golf course view room. We had to work with management to get a room with an ocean view however, it did not have a king bed. We would have had to wait two or three nights for a room with a king bed due to the Resort catering to an on-site conference, they were hosting.
We opted to take the room with the queen bed and better view and remained there for our entire stay. We had some television issues and they were quick to respond and able to fix the issue immediately.
Valet, welcoming, and front desk staff were very attentive and helpful. Outside of those areas, the staff at Brown’s deli and Hale Kai restaurant also did a great job.
We enjoyed using the fitness area that is well equipped with cardiovascular equipment and weight machines.
Umbrellas are very limited at the adult pool, and if you want some shade, you need to be up early to get lounges under the umbrellas as they are generally gone by 7 AM. Although they have a one hour rule of leaving the lounges vacant many of them are vacant with towels on them and “saved” yet staff are fearful of removing the towels and personal property. There were a few days when we observed saved lounges with no one sitting in them for 2 to 3 hours at a time.
The beach is a great area for snorkeling and families with children as it is protected with little to no waves. Unfortunately, they do not offer any umbrellas on the beach, but instead offer shaded daybeds at an additional daily charge.

Having stayed at other Fairmont properties in the past, and other resort properties on the big island, the Fairmont Orchid, did not live up to our “ higher end” resort expectations.
Restaurant and food choices are average and overpriced, including alcoholic beverages.
They do offer van/transportation services to the local market and area where there are some additional restaurant and food choices.
Yoga on the lawn is offered at 7 AM and 8:30 AM, six days a week with good instruction from Sunny to accommodate all yoga enthusiast levels

Such a wonderful resort. The staff was lovely, super accommodating and pleasant. The grounds were also beautiful and right on the beach. The best part of this hotel was the fact that they do not nickel and dime you on everything unlike some of the other high end hotel chains. They had water stations everywhere (provided you refillable bottles), sunscreen by the pool, easy to access towels, nicely stocked rooms...etc which made your trip so much more enjoyable. I didn't have to ask them for anything really. Everything was so thought out.

The Orchid is my favorite place. Unfortunately, it has gotten a little "tired" over the years. The grounds themselves need some attention. Our lanai could use a good pressure washing. No longer able to order a smaller breakfast than the buffet, at the outside breakfast area. Construction going on at the large pool. Many areas the carpet is buckling. For a "High end" property , it is in desperate need of some attention, maybe even a remodel. It was the 100% consensus of other guests I spoke with during our stay...

The rooms at the Fairmont Orchid are very clean and spacious, although a bit dated. I am not sure if I would have booked it without the Travelzoo deal. All the staff at the resort are friendly and courteous. The agent who did our check-in spent extra time going over the resort map, restaurants and hours with us, I thought that was a nice touch.
The service around the pool area was consistently for us. The first day when we sat at the pool, we were asked a few times by the server if we needed anything, more drinks or food, it was great! The 2nd day, we sat on the lawn area that's right beside the pool, two servers roamed around the area all afternoon and neither of them stopped by and asked if we needed anything. They did, however, served two groups besides us. We didn't need anything per se, but had they stopped by and asked us, maybe we would have ordered a drink or two. But since they didn't, we didn't care to flag them down. It wasn't a big deal, but it was definitely weird and it felt like they only wanted to serve certain guests.

Hotel is on a gorgeous property, beach is amazing and lots of space for people to spread out. Not the most restaurant variety especially for breakfast and lunch which was limited Staff is very accommodating and responsive to needs which was great. Rooms could use some updating, definitely dated and not as luxury as we thought they would be for a high end resort like fairmont. Pools were in great condition as was the beach however no shade available for hotel guests on the beach unless you bought a cabana which was a huge negative. 1 hour snorkel rentals and courtesy life jackets was great along with the reef safe sunscreen.

Rooms need refreshing for this caliber of a hotel (bathroom outdated, our bed was broken and needed to be switched out after we asked). Need to provide guests who stay at the hotel with complimentary shade on the beach. Most people come for nature and the ocean, not the pools and shade is key especially with little kids. Resort fee should encompass that.

I enjoyed staying at the hotel very much. Big, beautiful grounds with gorgeous landscaping, waterfalls, and pools. Staff were all very nice and friendly. I had one small issue in my room, and maintenance was quickly dispatched to fix it. Room service charges were exorbitant: $12 child-size pizza turned into $28. They still clean the rooms daily, and even have turn down service. The water bottle filling stations throughout the hotel are a very nice touch.

Loved every minute I was there and did not want to leave. The rooms and grounds were great and the staff incredible. The Brown's Beachside restaurant was overrated.

The resort needs a fresh coat of paint and fix some of the visible cosmetic damage to the exterior. Still a nice resort.

I was not satisfied with the cleanliness of the room they had assigned to us but the housekeeping staff immediately took care of it as well as offering a nicer room without an additional charge.

I love the layout of the resort and the openness of the common areas which gave me the feeling of a Southern Estate when walking from our room to other areas.

Room was dated. Mold on the shower grout. Poor lighting in bathroom. No hand towels near the vanity. Hand towels only in the toilet room. Browns beach house restaurant was disappointing. Dined there twice, quality of food much worse than last year. Positives: grounds are beautiful: beach, snorkeling and pool were very good. We rented a beach daybed and enjoyed that experience.
