"Luxurious without being flashy" (Frommer’s), The Listel Hotel Vancouver combines behind-the-scenes eco wizardry (it’s the first green hotel in Vancouver), with curated British Columbian artwork in a tasteful boutique hotel. The low-rise property has an avant-garde tiled exterior, but is terribly discreet (first-time visitors may find it hard to find).

Thanks to the hotel’s relationship with leading gallery Buschlen Mowatt, there’s a great selection of contemporary art in the lobby, direct access to the gallery next door, and more pieces in the rooms on the gallery (fourth and fifth) floors. All rooms have floor-to ceiling windows that open and fridges rather than mini bars. Rooms at the back are quieter, but miss out on Robson Street views.

Close to both the Financial District and residential Westend, the hotel is set on trendy Robson Street, Vancouver’s most popular shopping section, half a block from the city’s designer shops and fine dining restaurants. Stanley Park is a 20-minute walk away, and it’s an easy five minutes on foot to the waterfront at Coal Harbour.

The on-site restaurant Forage specializes in fine dining versions of hearty Canadian meals using foraged, home-grown or locally sourced produce, and supports the hotel’s eco-friendly principles. Chef Chris Whittaker composts all the food waste and keeps mason bees to pollinate the crops. Typical dishes include mushrooms with Okanagan goat’s cheese on grilled caraway rye bread and British Columbian spot prawn and seafood chowder. There are more than 200 different wines offered, as well as 10 craft beers on tap.

There is a 6.19% facility fee, which provides Internet access, unlimited calls (local, Canada and U.S.), unlimited faxes, business center access, morning newspaper (on request) and access to the in-house fitness center and the Steve Nash Fitness World Express (three blocks from the hotel).

We live in Vancouver, but stayed at the Listel on Robson to celebrate my husband's birthday during Dine Out Vancouver. Nikki provided an enthusiastic welcome to the hotel, with hot apple cider on arrival and a later wine tasting off the lobby. She also introduced us to the hotel's art collection and alerted us to a couple of unfamiliar galleries in the downtown area. Our room on the fourth floor was comfortable, and the manager and all of the staff we encountered were very pleasant to deal with. We would happily stay there again and recommend it to others.
