Map & Directions

The hotel is 30-50 minutes by taxi from John F. Kennedy International Airport, depending on the traffic. The fare is approximately $50, not including tip or toll. The journey from JFK by public transport is longer but costs only $7.50. Take the AirTrain to Howard Beach, then the line A subway to Jay Street – MetroTech, and finally change to line F to Essex Street, a five-minute walk from the hotel (one hour and 20 minutes total transit time). If you opt to bring your car, there’s valet parking at the hotel, but it’s pretty pricey (public parking behind the hotel is a little cheaper).

Overview

Every exterior wall in the 21-story Hotel on Rivington has floor-to-ceiling windows, offering views of the Empire State Building in one direction and the Brooklyn Bridge in the other from bedrooms, the lobby, even guest room showers. The modern, monochromatic skyscraper soars above the surrounding brick tenements of Manhattan’s Lower East Side and incorporates the city’s landscape to become part of the design through its transparent facade.

Rooms are larger than the New York average and come equipped with Tempur-Pedic beds, automated curtains, iHome stereos and free Wi-Fi. Minibars are stocked with champagne, candles and massage oil, setting a romantic mood. Half the rooms have balconies with views of the East River and beyond, while all include Italian tiled bathrooms outfitted with either Japanese-style deep soaking tubs or oversized steam showers.

On the ground floor, Cafe Medi attracts a stylish crowd for breakfast and dinner before a live DJ takes over on weekend nights. The hotel’s intimate lounge, JIA, has a black-felt pool table and specializes in tacos and tequila. Overnight visitors enjoy exclusive access to all-day coffee and tea as well as a daily wine reception in the guests-only lounge. The hotel also provides guests complimentary access to a 24-hour fitness centre, and the East River Promenade is nearby for a scenic waterfront jog.

The edgy downtown location is great for nightlife, and the hotel is also within a 20-minute walk of bars and restaurants in the East Village, SoHo, Chinatown and Little Italy. To reach popular tourist attractions like Times Square, One World Observatory and Central Park, just hop on one of the four subway lines that stop at the end of the street.

Ample amount of space in room, loved the open shower. It was a little different but loved the concept. The decor hip and trendy.

Disappointed that I was not able to use my $50 credit which was a big plus to book the hotel. The check in and out process was pretty blah. Not very enthusiastic, didn't feel they were willing to help or accommodate me. The bellman really helpful and nice.

Fantastic bed - just like our new Casper mattress at home. Very good deal on parking at municipal lot at Delancey and Essex, which was right around the corner - awesomely convenient! No need for a valet. Staff was friendly and disappointed my little dog didn't make the trip with us after all. There's a farmer's market right across the street that was nice to get fruit and coffee for breakfast.

Even on the 16th floor, the street noise kept us awake (in fairness, the city was especially noisy because of St Patrick's Day). Because the buildings are low, the horn honking sounded like it was right outside the window! We got a good deal on a corner room with a stunning view, but spent more money on subway and taxi rides to get to the theatre district. If our activities had been in that neighborhood, though, it would have been a good deal.

Maybe mention in the Before You Go info that the hotel is on the 2nd floor. There’s no signage inside and when you walk in it doesn’t look like a hotel. Also we had a really strange incident - we were asleep in our room at 3:30 am and some random drunk woman comes into our room. She was drunk and didn’t know what room was hers and somehow her electronic key card opened our door. I wouldn’t think those keys should be able to open other people’s doors. So that was a little scary.
