Why We Love This Hotel

  • The Hotel Portmeirion & Castle Deudraeth are in the village of Portmeirion, on a private peninsula in Gwynedd
  • With its "colonnades, fountains and candy-coloured cottages", Portmeirion is like a "fantastical Italianate village", says Condé Nast Traveller
  • Dine in the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant, designed by Sir Terence Conran

"A fabulous stay. The staff were some of the best we have met. Food was some of the best we have ever tasted. The only thing that wasn't up to standard was the bed. It was lumpy and hard. Very uncomfortable making a dreadful noise when we moved. The tiling in the bathroom was grubby and needs cleaning. Other than that a fantastic experience."

The Hotel Portmeirion is an "elegant" hotel with one of the "finest settings in Wales" that is "magical" at night, according to The AA Hotel Guide 2016. Set in the village of Portmeirion, where the 1960s TV series "The Prisoner" was filmed, the hotel is on a private peninsula in Gwynedd, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park.

It was designed in the style of an Italian village and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925-1975. The hotel is a member of Welsh Rarebits Hotels of Distinction, which praises the "dazzling" architecture.

All the buildings at Portmeirion are Grade II listed and the whole estate is a designated Conservation Area. Portmeirion has a total of 55 bedrooms; accommodation includes 14 rooms in the main hotel, which overlooks the Dwyryd Estuary, 30 rooms and suites in the surrounding village, and 11 contemporary rooms and suites in Castell Deudraeth.

Castell Deudraeth opened in 2001, following a renovation of the Victorian building and its gardens. It is an early-Victorian castellated mansion with Baronial elements, borrowed from the Gothic and Tudor periods. Rooms fuse traditional Welsh materials with cutting-edge technology and design.

The hotel's 2-AA-Rosette restaurant was designed by Sir Terence Conran in 2005. The Restaurant Guide 2016 praises the Art Deco dining room for being a "gem" serving "fresh, lively, modern Welsh cooking".

Guests staying at both hotels enjoy free access to all Portmeirion Village's facilities, including the outdoor swimming pool. There is a courtesy minibus service between Castell Deudraeth and The Portmeirion Hotel.

During the day the village is open to the public, but from 7pm onwards hotel guests can explore without the crowds. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.

Portmeirion is also home to Festival No 6 -- the village comes alive with impromptu performances from a authors, poets, actors and artists for four days in September.

Helpful staff, nice room, fabulous setting with nice walks
Other Comments
People with mobility issues would fine walking around Portmeirion difficult, but there is a courtesy bus and a mini train that goes around the site.

lovely hotel, spotless everywhere, very friendly, polite and helpful staff. View from room was gorgeous, coastal walk great, led back to chinese lake and the village. Meal at castell was nice, however vegetarian menu choice wasn't great.

The room was beautiful with amazing views over the village and estuary. It was so tranquil with birds landing on the window cill of our room to beg crumbs! The service at breakfast and at our evening meal was friendly and attentive.
Other Comments
The village is very steep with lots of steps in places, but there are mini buses and open top cars and a village train, so even the disabled are cared for. If a little older, take your time, savoir the views, stop for a coffee, especially when the sun is shining as it certainly was May 20th 2019!

Nice sitting area in the bedroom.
Other Comments
Nice roaring log fire in the lounge. Access to the village and use of courtesy bus into the village. Food was good.
