The grand Hydro Hotel, which opened in 1895, is set on one of Eastbourne's cliffs, within the Meads area, just over a mile from the town centre and its Grade II-listed pier.

Local attractions include Beachy Head, which Lonely Planet describes as "a spot of thrilling beauty", the South Downs National Park and the Sussex Heritage Coast, which are all a 5-minute drive away.

Battle Abbey, a partially ruined Benedictine abbey and the site of the last successful invasion of England in 1066, is less than 40 minutes' drive away. Pevensey Castle, the ruins of William the Conqueror’s first stronghold, is less than 25 minutes' drive away.

Bodiam Castle, an impressive 14th-century moated castle, is less than an hour's drive away.

The hotel has sweeping sea views from its landscaped gardens, which include a croquet lawn and a putting green. There are two restaurants on site, which serve English and French cuisine. Afternoon tea can be taken in the conservatory, and there is a lounge and a cocktail bar.

The AA describes the hotel's bedrooms as "attractive and well equipped", and all are individually decorated. Wi-Fi is free.

Hotel itself was lovely including room. Staff helpful even when dealing with problems they could not have any control over. Lovely position.

Our room was very nice but our view was windows opposite plus a lower roof covered in pigeon mess. We were also above an office so could hear conversations very clearly. No cold water on saturday evening and then no water at all on sunday morning. Breakfast was a ridiculous wait of almost 45 mins with others waiting much longer. No management present to explain totally left to staff especially reception to deal with complaints although not their fault. Did get a small refund for inconvenience.
