Rooms & Rates
The Bear of Rodborough is a former coaching inn that dates from the 17th century, when it was a popular stopover on the route from Gloucester to London. The stone archway through which travellers' horses would enter and the bell to call the inn keeper still remain, and antique pieces feature throughout the hotel.
The hotel is in Rodborough, which overlooks the market town of Stroud in the heart of the Cotswolds. Tetbury is a short drive away and worth a visit -- Lonely Planet says its "busy streets are lined with medieval cottages, sturdy old town houses and Georgian gems". Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and Gloucester, are all within an hour's drive of the hotel.
Bedrooms in the Country House annex are by the main house, which is connected to the annex by a covered walkway. Rooms are on the first and ground floors and some have views of Woodchester Valley. All have king size beds.
The newly refurbished Library Restaurant has an AA Rosette and serves dishes using locally sourced ingredients. There's an extensive wine list, which can also be enjoyed in The Bear Bar. In here you'll find open log fires and a terrace area with a croquet lawn for the warmer months. Lunch and dinner are available in the bar and lounge. The AA Hotel Guide 2014 says, "character abounds in the lounges and cocktail bar". The hotel also has a VisitEngland Gold Award & a Breakfast Award.
The on-site wine warehouse, Bin Ends at The Bear, sells over 400 variations of wine. Guests get a voucher at check-in that entitles you to a free bottle of Pinot Grigio Blush when purchasing any bottle of wine.
