Why We Love This Hotel

  • Excellent location for Northern Lights' sightings; staff will give you a wake-up call to see them
  • Two outdoor natural-spring hot tubs, with mountain views
  • There's an on-site 18-hole golf course
  • An hour’s drive from Reykjavik & a good spot on the way to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Travellers hunting for the Northern Lights in Iceland should head out of Reykjavik and to the countryside. Icelandair Hotel Hamar staff will provide a well-timed wake-up call on request to maximise your chance of seeing them.

Just outside of Borgarnes, an hour’s drive from Reykjavik city centre, the hotel is in a good spot for visitors to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This area of western Iceland is known for its black-sand beaches, traditional fishing villages and the lava caves in the national park. Whale-watching trips leave from Grundarfjörõur (an hour’s drive) and there are hiking trails nearby.

The hotel itself is in a fairly isolated location (you’ll need to drive to shops and restaurants), but there is an 18-hole golf course on site and a restaurant serving local fare, featuring home-grown vegetables. Try the cod with cauliflower puree, pak choy, miso and sesame, or a double-smoked leg of lamb with beetroot glaze. A continental breakfast is served here in the morning and there’s a daily happy hour from 5-7pm. You can also unwind in one of two outdoor hot tubs, fed by natural springs.

The bedrooms are an adequate size, with king-size beds, and modern, minimal décor. The hotel is set across one level, and all rooms have access to a patio – those at the back of the building have picturesque golf course- and snow-capped-mountain views. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
