"Really lovely estate. Very nice rooms but extremely thin walls. Would recommend bringing earplugs. Dinner was lovely. Buffet breakfast a bit chaotic - would recommend having breakfast in your room."

Overview

The 4-star Laura Ashley The Manor in Hertfordshire offers boutique accommodation in the countryside just 30 minutes from London. Owned by the Laura Ashley brand, it is listed in The Times's Cool Hotel Guide, which praises its "elegant" style and "excellent service".

Tucked away at the end of a curved driveway in Elstree, the Tudor Victorian house is surrounded by 10 acres of manicured gardens. It has a large terrace that overlooks a pond, and there's a big chess set on the lawn.

The hillside manor retains many of its original architectural features, including the dramatic wooden fireplace in the centre of the grand reception hall. The décor, designed by the Laura Ashley team, features neutral colours, rich fabrics and ornamental pieces.

Dine in the Michelin Guide-listed Cavendish Restaurant, which recently received an AA Rosette and sources its ingredients locally and serves modern British dishes. We like the sound of the seared mackerel with garlic mayonaise and beetroot salad, the braised featherblade of beef with mashed potatoes and wild mushrooms, and the bread and butter pudding with crème Anglaise. The Terrace Bar overlooks the gardens and has panoramic views of London on a clear day. It's an ideal spot for afternoon tea with a glass of champagne.

There are 49 rooms: Standard Double rooms are in the contemporary wing of the hotel. Most Superior rooms (also in the contemporary wing) have direct access to the terraced garden area and views of the hotel grounds. Deluxe rooms are in the main house and some have views of London. Some Suites also have views of London. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

The property has featured in The Guardian, Country Living and the Evening Standard, as well as television programmes and films. Previous guests include Peter Sellers, Tom Cruise and John Cleese.

nicely appointed hotel. decor was lovely. You could tell the Laura Ashley influence. All the staff we encountered were very pleasant and helpful. We visited in the winter but could see that the hotel and the grounds lent themselves to an enjoyable stay .

The travelzoo offer was very good value, but the cost of drinks and mandatory surcharge in the bar made enjoying a drink quite an expensive addition

Being charged 10% service charge for a drink standing at the Bar. The prices were already high £11.50 for a glass of wine plus 10% on top to pour it out.

We had a very enjoyable two nights at the Manor Elstree. Staff were very friendly and the room was comfortable, although a touch on the cold side. Food was excellent quality and all cooked from fresh but at times this meant quite long periods of waiting between courses. All in all we had a good weekend and would definitely go back.
