"The building itself, which was beautiful. Very atmospheric rooms, especially the Great Hall and Restaurant. The staff were excellent and could not do enough. The meal was delicious - with a good choice of selections. Unusual for an inclusive meal, and a very pleasant surprise. Rooms were good sized, very comfortable with all necessary amenities."

Steeped in history, this Elizabethan manor house boasts 11 acres of grounds incorporating a 100-year-old topiary garden, a fountain and an 11th-century church where William Shakespeare is said to have married Anne Hathaway.

The pretty town of Stratford-upon-Avon, where you'll find Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Mary Arden's Farm, is less than 10 minutes away by car. Warwick, known for its massive Norman castle, Charlecote Park, Tudor World and Ragley Hall, considered one of England's finest Palladian mansions, are all less than 20 minutes' drive away.

Facilities at the hotel include a health club with a gym, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna and a steam room, plus tennis courts, a yoga hut and beauty rooms. Alternatively, guests can relax in the library, reputedly visited by Shakespeare himself.

The hotel's Stuart Restaurant is split into two areas within the old manor house: an oak-panelled dining room and The Great Hall, which has a minstrels' gallery.

Rooms are split between the Manor House and the Cedar Barns (a short walk from the main building), and all have traditional décor and views of the hotel grounds. Wi-Fi is free.

Most of the staff we dealt with were pleasant and, I imagine, the hotel grounds would be very attractive in summer.

I had booked the visit as a surprise for for my partner's birthday - we were disappointed at the quality of the food. It was devoid of flavour for the most part. My starter of Chicken and leek terrine was served so chilled as to be tasteless - none of the flavours of the ingredients were identifiable. My main course of sea bass consisted of 2 tiny fillets served on a small portion of potatoes which were not very hot. My dessert was a mixture of watery sorbet without any real flavour. Our plans to have a pleasant, quiet drink in the bar after the meal were scuppered by the raucous behaviour of some guests from a wedding party.

Hotel full of history and grandeur in a lovely setting. Great little spa, swimming steam and sauna. The evening meal was wonderful, but the breakfast was a nothing special help yourself buffet. We had paid for a superior room, and given the whole attic suite of rooms, made up of lounge, bedroom and bathroom, but disappointingly all very tired and dated.
Other Comments
It was exceptionally cold when we visited this week, old mullioned windows with single glazing, ambient but freezing, especially in the bathroom. The beds were not very comfortable, and really need an update. Some of the other rooms shown on the web site look as if they have had a recent make over. They were happy to refund some of our additional expenses. We would still return to this hotel but would ask for a better room.

Main house was very historic.
Other Comments
The room was always dark..lack of sufficient lighting.Carpet puckered badly worn.No mirror above desk to do make up and the sink in the bathroom was too big for husband to have a closer shave in the mirror. Too many supplements and lack of choice on evening meal.
