Why We Love This Hotel

  • Rooms come with free Wi-Fi and were renovated in 2018
  • Warm and friendly service is a staple at this fourth-generation family-owned boutique
  • The property boasts one of the biggest outdoor heated pools in the Mission Valley
  • Free courtesy shuttle to SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and other spots within 5 kilometres (3 miles)

With a family-owned history that spans four generations and over half a century, the Handlery Hotel specializes in friendly service. A moderate price tag and an easy-to-reach locale add to the appeal.

The boutique hotel is set in the north part of town in the Mission Valley neighbourhood, so guests can hop on the highway and be at most of the city’s top attractions — SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, the Fashion Valley Mall and the Gaslamp District — in 15 minutes flat. Parking is safe and secure and half the price of downtown hotels, plus there’s a convenient complimentary shuttle that treks to Old Town and spots within 5 kilometres (3 miles).

Guest rooms — all renovated in 2018 — are traditional with modern touches like free Wi-Fi and ergonomic work desks. Just beyond the sleeping quarters sits the centerpiece of the property — a huge outdoor heated pool and hot tub with plenty of chaises for year-round lounging plus seasonal snacks and beverages from the poolside Reef Lounge. Upgraded Premier rooms offer the best views and quickest access to the pool. The pool area closes at 10 p.m. but can be noisy during the day.

After a dip, head to the 950 Lounge for happy hour cocktails on Mondays-Thursdays, and jazz nights every Friday where staff menu picks like panko-crusted portebello mushroom fries are served in casual SoCal style. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at Postcards, which specializes in American bistro cuisine.

Other Comments
In attempt of utilizing the courtesy shuttle one in our party experienced an injury while boarding the shuttle van. The step stool that was provided was the same height as the shuttle van. Thus, defeating the intended purpose of providing a suitable mobility aid for boarding. Recommend replacing the step stool with a shorter one to provide adequate mobility aid and prevent future accidents/injuries.

Check in was easy and I was even upgraded to a room overlooking the pool. Unfortunately I had to ask for assistance with carrying my heavy suitcase up a flight of steps (no elevator for my section). The room was visibly clean and smelled of cleaning product. I had to open the window for a while to air the room out. I signed up and took their free local shuttle to the nearby mall, SeaWorld, Old Town, and the San Diego Zoo/Balboa Park area. All areas were really close to the hotel.
Other Comments
There's a restaurant & bar onsite which has Happy Hour. You have to sign up for the free area shuttle service that was running from 9:00a- 4:30p daily when I was there. The pool is heated. Many of the rooms are outside the main building, set- up as a motel. The staff were very friendly.

The bathroom was clean. Parking was included, as was breakfast.

Room was exceptionally small and bathroom was really old and cramped. You had to reach over the toilet to use in in-wall hair dryer.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was excellent! The room was decent, and had been updated but you could tell this was an older hotel with small rooms and a very small bathroom. The controls on the temperature were messed up, so it was either extremely cold or extremely hot. They did bring us extra blankets so we were able to stay warm at night. We got a good deal through TravelZoo, but I would not pay the going price the hotel had posted for this room, as it is too high.

The hotel was located along the highway in an area of similar hotels Convenient for getting to SanDiego visitor attractions. However unless you want to dine in the hotels restaurant, there are very few nearby options in walking distance. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was clean but small. The property itself has the standard resort amenities but is is dated. We enjoyed the included breakfasts and found the parking easy and secure. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The included transportation was not available on one day of our stay, so theY told us to Uber or take a cab and they’d reimburse us, which they did!

Even with an upgrade our room was on the outside facing the highway. The hotel location is right next to a major highway. And the picture shown in your advertisement was not of the hotel. I thought Travelzoo did a better job of choosing. I will be reluctant to book with you again. There were much nicer hotels in the area charging less than we paid.

The room was upgraded and wonderful. The hotel was very clean and had extra amenities that we did not expect like a toothbrush and robes. The staff was always helpful and in good spirits. I definitely appreciate the hospitality of the Handlery Hotel and I am happy I booked this awesome deal!
