With a family-owned history that spans across four generations and over half a century, the Handlery Hotel specializes in friendly service. A moderate price tag and an easy-to-reach locale add to the appeal.

The boutique hotel is set in the northern part of town in the Mission Valley neighbourhood, so guests can hop on the highway and be at most of the city’s top attractions -- SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, the Fashion Valley Mall and the Gaslamp District -- in 15 minutes flat. Parking is safe and secure and half the price of downtown hotels, plus there’s a convenient complimentary shuttle that treks to Old Town and spots within 5 km of the property.

Guest rooms are styled in traditional fashion and kept fresh with modern touches like free Wi-Fi and ergonomic work desks. Just beyond the sleeping quarters sits the centerpiece of the property -- a huge outdoor heated pool and hot tub with plenty of chaises for year-round lounging, and seasonal snacks and beverages from the poolside Reef Lounge. Upgraded premier rooms offer the best views and quickest access to the pool. The pool area closes at 10 p.m. but can be noisy during the day.

After a dip, head to the 950 Lounge for happy hour cocktails on Mondays-Thursdays, and jazz nights every Friday where staff menu picks like panko-crusted portebello mushroom fries are served in causal SoCal style. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at Postcards, which specializes in American bistro cuisine.

Make the most of the city with this seven-day SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park pass.

Great location. Hotel has a free Shuttle to major attractions and the Metro/Trolley is within walking distance from hotel. Staff was very accommodating and friendly. The free breakfast, although limited options, was very good.

My room was clean and for the most part quiet. My bed was very comfortable. It was always clean and comfy. Breakfast was included daily and it was large and delicious. The wait staff, as well as the dining room manager were on top of things and ready to help in any way. The pool area was very nice, but, as it was spring break there were lots of families so lots of kids- even in the jacuzzi. I was a guest for 5 nights.

Nice place. Friendly service. The hotel offers many amenities. The rooms are small and could use updating, but the beds were very comfortable. The hotel did honor the breakfast vouchers that were in effect at the time that I booked the hotel on travel zoo, even though the offer has expired months ago. If travel zoo offers another promotion at the handler three San Diego, I would consider purchasing it.
Other Comments
When I called the hotel directly to find out about the breakfast options, they were very helpful. However, most of the links provided on Google actually redirected me to third party sites. When I accidentally called one of these sites, the people who answered were totally ignorant of what the Handlery hotel had to offer as far as breakfast options and truly wasted my time. At least the people who work at this hotel were very helpful when I called them directly.

Family owned hotel, older but nicely refurbished, out of the downtown area but easy to get to town. Free shuttle service to several places. Everyone extremely nice at this facility. Excellent breakfast and wonderful service.
