The Palomar San Diego, a Kimpton Hotel combines the best of two worlds: It’s within walking distance to everything the famous Gaslamp Quarter has to offer, and it has the signature Kimpton touches like leopard-print robes and free happy hour wine tastings.

Small room; had to sit on bed to watch TV; cramped access to wardrobe; no linen sheets as advertised; bathroom door inadequate; desk staff did not automatically give us our Travelzoo discounts, had to negotiate to get them all.

We enjoyed our stay at this Kimpton Hotel. The staff was very welcoming and attentive, which made for a pleasant experience. We love that the hotel and the area overall was so dog friendly, so we were able to enjoy this trip with our fur baby.

This hotel is going to the dogs – literally. We stayed on the 12th floor, and every time I was about to fall asleep, a dog in a nearby room would start barking. It wasn’t just one room, it was at least three. This continued until after midnight. This hotel needs to decide whether it is a hotel or a kennel. When I discussed this with the desk as I was checking out in the morning, the staff was very helpful, and comped us our breakfast, which was a nice gesture. They also recommended that next time we request a pet free floor. Ok, but should it really be necessary to request a room where you won’t be kept awake by barking dogs until after midnight (may have been longer but put in my wife’s earplugs)? Also, I don’t think this would help much if the room above or below you had a dog. A better approach would be to limit dogs to the lower floors, and have the other guests on the upper floors. I own a dog and like dogs, but at a hotel such as the Kimpton, people should have priority over dogs. The other issue with the hotel is actually part of a larger problem. While the hotel is conveniently located close to the Gaslamp, this is also becoming problematic, as this area is becoming a blight on San Diego. One-half block up, in front of the CVS, there was a deranged street person shouting obscenities and even threats at nearly every passerby. On the same block we had to walk into the street to get around sleeping homeless people, and over rivulets and puddles of urine. This was all before 8pm, I hate to think what it would be like later. Again, this isn’t the hotels fault, but if I were from out of town, I would choose a nicer location.

Attentive, professional and friendly staff at both the hotel and the restaurant. The TravelZoo deal made it great value. If we had to pay full retail we would look elsewhere due to the the large homeless population surrounding the hotel.

The hotel is in the middle of a neighborhood overflowing with homeless people. We would have to think hard about ever returning.
