The Palomar San Diego, a Kimpton Hotel combines the best of two worlds: It’s within walking distance to everything the famous Gaslamp Quarter has to offer, and it has the signature Kimpton touches like leopard-print robes and free happy hour wine tastings.

A stay here means you are steps from some of San Diego’s most exciting nightlife. The House of Blues music venue is right next door, and 200 restaurants, from steak houses to sushi joints, are all within an eight-minute walk.

Rooms are contemporary and modern with standout touches, including Jerusalem limestone bathrooms with rainfall showers and Italian Frette linens on the beds.

Libations and light fare are available at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and pool deck, which also hosts DJ-led seasonal parties at the infinity pool. Foodies should visit the lobby’s gastro lounge, Saltbox, which specializes in farm-fresh flavours and local ingredients.

This hotel is going to the dogs – literally. We stayed on the 12th floor, and every time I was about to fall asleep, a dog in a nearby room would start barking. It wasn’t just one room, it was at least three. This continued until after midnight. This hotel needs to decide whether it is a hotel or a kennel. When I discussed this with the desk as I was checking out in the morning, the staff was very helpful, and comped us our breakfast, which was a nice gesture. They also recommended that next time we request a pet free floor. Ok, but should it really be necessary to request a room where you won’t be kept awake by barking dogs until after midnight (may have been longer but put in my wife’s earplugs)? Also, I don’t think this would help much if the room above or below you had a dog. A better approach would be to limit dogs to the lower floors, and have the other guests on the upper floors. I own a dog and like dogs, but at a hotel such as the Kimpton, people should have priority over dogs. The other issue with the hotel is actually part of a larger problem. While the hotel is conveniently located close to the Gaslamp, this is also becoming problematic, as this area is becoming a blight on San Diego. One-half block up, in front of the CVS, there was a deranged street person shouting obscenities and even threats at nearly every passerby. On the same block we had to walk into the street to get around sleeping homeless people, and over rivulets and puddles of urine. This was all before 8pm, I hate to think what it would be like later. Again, this isn’t the hotels fault, but if I were from out of town, I would choose a nicer location.

Attentive, professional and friendly staff at both the hotel and the restaurant. The TravelZoo deal made it great value. If we had to pay full retail we would look elsewhere due to the the large homeless population surrounding the hotel.

The hotel is in the middle of a neighborhood overflowing with homeless people. We would have to think hard about ever returning.

Their prompt response when our in-room phone, TV, and shower hot water did not work.

They are very confused about the Travel Zoo package workings. The check-in desk agent told us the hotel would reduce the food/bev by 20% before they posted to our bill. They did not. When we checked out the full charges were on the bill and already charged. I had to dispute and that check-out agent told me we should have told the restaurant and room service. How would they know if we had that deal or not? The desk reception should be more up to date on how to handle the TZ package details. Also, on two days we were out from 9 AM to 3 PM and when we got back our room was still not cleaned.

Large, clean room with spectacular view of San Diego.

Compared to the wine social provided at the Kimpton hotel in downtown Phoenix, the wine social at the San Diego Palomar was second-rate. The Phoenix social offered more wines and far more food/snacks. Believe it or not, but this is one aspect of the Kimpton hotels that is important to us.
