The Lion Hotel is a Grade I-listed former coaching inn in Shrewsbury. It is rich in history and has previously welcomed Charles Dickens, who wrote The Pickwick Papers while staying at the hotel. Charles Darwin also stayed here before beginning his journey to South America, the Galapagos Islands and Australia.

Located in the historic market town of Shrewsbury, the hotel is an ideal spot from which to explore the medieval cobbled streets. Walk along the waterfront, or do a bit of shopping at the Pride Hill and Darwin shopping centres -- both are less than 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel.

This 16th-century hotel has retained a wealth of period features including a Tudor fireplace and portraits of noble lords and ladies in powdered wigs. Relax in the tapestry lounge or have a cuppa and a piece of homemade cake in the fully panelled Oak Bar.

Rooms are individually designed in keeping with the Tudor and Elizabethan heritage. Tea- and coffee-making facilities are included, and all rooms are en-suite with either a bath, a shower or both.

The Hayward restaurant serves modern British dishes. We like the sound of the shell-on scallops with a herb crust, the pan-fried lamb with pea and mint purée and creamy herby mash, and the warm treacle tart with clotted-cream ice cream.

The last time we ran a Getaway for this property, 90% of Travelzoo subscribers who rated their experience said they loved it.

some confusion around travelzoo voucher system and whether we've paid or not at time of booking - needs more clarity to save confusion on arrival

Staff were very pleasant and helpful. We were upgraded to a suite - wished we were staying longer than one night. Parking wasn't free so we had to pay £5 for our visit.

The location, could not be more central for the town

Stayed in the Dickens suite. Although the Lion is a Grade One listed, the suite could badly requires a makeover, new mattress (did not fit base) TV old and restricted channels, very noisy as old ill fitting windows single pane, and almost no ventilation, bathroom OK but tap shower poor variable flow, all other "bits" felt shabby not particularly clean. Breakfast was excellent and staff friendly history of the hotel and ambience in public rooms very impressive. One last comment watch out for the uneven floors in rooms, can be tricky!

Communication was poor with hotel from booking to staff. Staff didn't seem to know about any of the special offers we had through TravelZoo!! Tried to book earl check in by email (hotel didn't respond). Got late check out only after discussion and tried to charge. Not offered an upgrade!
