Driving from London, follow the M40 northwest towards Oxford. It takes roughly an hour and costs £10-£14 in petrol. Parking is free at the hotel. You can also reach the hotel in 58 minutes by train from London Paddington Station. Once in Oxford, take a bus (Oxford Bus Company or Stagecoach UK) to Iffley and then walk 5 minutes to the hotel - the journey costs £31-£33 and takes approximately an hour and 15 minutes. A bus from Marylebone Station to Oxford takes an extra 15 minutes and costs £12-£17.
Hawkwell House Hotel is a good-value, refined country-house hotel built in the early 19th century. Once the home of famous polar explorer Francis Howard Bickerton, it is in a peaceful location in the Cotswolds, near Oxford and attractions such as Blenheim Palace and Cotswolds Wildlife Park.
Oxford city centre is a 6-minute drive or a 20-minute bus ride from the quaint village of Iffley, a 4-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is also a pleasant 39-minute walk from the city, along the scenic River Iffley. The 12th-century St Mary’s Church -- one of the UK's finest examples of Romanesque architecture -- is within a 1-minute walk of the hotel. As well as its famous "dreaming spires", Oxford's attractions include the Ashmolean Museum's collection of art and archaeology, and the Mediaeval Bodleian Library. Other area attractions include Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, which is a 19-minute drive from the hotel (or a 53-minute bus ride), and Cotswold Wildlife Park, which is within a half-hour’s drive of the hotel.
Each of the hotel's 77 comfortable rooms and suites has a flat-screen TV with Freeview, free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and complimentary hot chocolate and biscuits. The newly refurbished rooms in the separate building ‘Elm House’ also come with SKY channels. Upgraded and family rooms include extra sitting and sleeping areas, with larger suites including 4-poster beds or whirlpool tubs, iPod docks and laptop safes. There are three wheelchair-adapted rooms, and a further 15 boutique, contemporary rooms in the nearby Elm House, which can be hired separately for large groups. A complimentary full English breakfast is included with the price.
The hotel's relaxed Iffley Blue restaurant has skylights and stripped wooden floors. There's also a bar, a terrace, a lounge, a conservatory, and meeting, banqueting and event spaces.

The room looked lovely despite the broken blind and no hot water in the shower and it was a bright airy place.

Service was appalling, problems with the room and took 30mins for them to sort the cream tea as they don’t know how there own system works. We had to leave in the end without it. Also they served instant coffee despite there being a full coffee machine behind the bar that we never saw used! Slow and ineffective as a staff. Queues for 40 mins just to check out!

If we had known about the ongoing building work we might not have booked. It would have been helpful to know about this in advance.

The room was very nice and the new sitting area around the fire looks lovely.

Staff were all lovely and the refurbishment didn’t impact our stay it really was the restaurant it was like a canteen and the menu didn’t fully cover what was in the dishes and lacking in choice. For me the restaurant spoilt our stay as we like to eat in the restaurant so we can relax and enjoy ourselves with no driving etc involved. The wine list was also very poor.

The breakfast was quite good, with a reasonable semi-buffet spread and nice items like smoked salmon and scrambled egg on its ala carte main menu.

When I asked for the prosecco which was supposed to be included with the cream tea I was told that the offer had expired - even though it was stated clearly in black and white on my confirmation. She did honour it though but I had to ask for it. I also had to ask for - and receive - the room upgrade when the hotel was clearly not very full. In fact when I first showed them our reservation I was told that we would have to pay for the upgrade. Finally, the hotel is undergoing renovations and when we first arrived I thought it had closed down. It was a bit off-putting trying to find the entrance to the temporary reception - one had to walk almost to the (restaurant) door to read a tiny sign saying that it was the temporary entrance. The whole experience rather reminded me of Fawlty Towers esp with its dated decor and foreign (although friendly) staff although they were obviously much more competent!!

We found the mattress too hot and uncomfortable. Did not get sparkling wine with cream tea. Location was great for getting into Oxford on the bus and our accommodation was lovely. Sadly no veggie sausages available for vegetarian breakfast on the menu.
