Set in gardens surrounded by towering mountains, the Hotel Villa Nicolli is a pretty family-owned property, 10 minutes’ walk from the shores of Lake Garda. The hotel is hidden at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac on the outskirts of Riva del Garda, “a thriving Italian town, with medieval towers, a smattering of Renaissance churches and palazzi, and narrow cobblestone streets” ( Frommer’s). The harbour in the centre of town is a 15 minute stroll away, where you can admire the yachts or catch a ferry to Sirmione, at the southern tip of the lake. Alternatively, explore the area on bike -- the hotel’s city bicycles are free to hire (deposit required).
Back at the hotel, guests can spend their time lounging on the terrace or in the secluded gardens, or swimming in the outdoor pool. A large spa suite with an indoor saltwater pool, steam rooms, sauna and salt grotto adjoins the villa. It has floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the views, and stays open until 10pm (over 18s only). Swimming caps are required in both pools and are available to purchase at the hotel. There’s also a small private spa suite for couples’ treatments, with its own Jacuzzi and sauna for private relaxation.
A buffet breakfast is served every morning, and in fine weather you can eat on the terrace by the pool. Dinner is more formal, with waiter service and a full 4-course menu of Italian dishes. In the evenings, you can enjoy the views from the terrace with a traditional aperitif from the bar. Wine tastings are arranged weekly for guests -- it’s best to book in advance as they often sell out (extra charge, but a bottle of olive oil to take away is included).
Rooms are clean, comfortable and air conditioned. Some have balconies and the best offer views of the vineyards and mountains beyond. Wi-Fi access is free.
