The Grand Hotel is a large Victorian property that occupies a "prime position on Torquay's seafront" (The AA). Built in the late 18th-century, it has an interesting history, having been used by the Royal Air Force during World War II -- there are messages that were scribbled on the walls by aircrew that are now hidden behind the wallpaper in some of the rooms. The hotel has also hosted rock legends The Rolling Stones and best-selling novelist Agatha Christie, who was born in Torquay and stayed at the hotel on her honeymoon.

Right in front of the hotel you can visit Corbyn Beach, which was once the site of a medieval harbour, or take a 15-minute stroll along the English Riviera to Torquay Marina. You can also take a trip to Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves or Babbacombe Model Village, which are both 10 minutes from the hotel by car or around 30 minutes by bus.

Guests can make full use the leisure facilities at the hotel, which include an indoor pool, a gym, a hot tub and a sauna. You can also book spa treatments (supplements apply).

The 1881 restaurant has been awarded an AA Rosette and offers a "genteel formality", according to The AA, with a menu that blends "traditional ideas" with a "contemporary thrust". You can also dine in The Compass Bar for a more informal alternative and "stunning views" (The AA).

Some confusion about the free bottle of wine. The wine waiter at dinner didn’t know about it but we learnt in the morning that it’s usually in your room on arrival Hence the confusion.
