Why We Love This Hotel

  • Moorland Garden Hotel is in a "splendid" (The AA) location for exploring Dartmoor and Plymouth
  • The AA also praises the hotel's "delightful" landscaped gardens
  • The Wildflower Restaurant, which holds an AA Rosette, has views over Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley

Overview

Moorland Garden Hotel is a 4-star hotel in a "splendid" location (The AA) on the edge of Dartmoor National Park -- a landscape of wooded valleys and granite tors that's home to more than 1000 wild ponies. The hotel combines "classic features with modern twists" (The Daily Telegraph) and is surrounded by nine acres of landscaped moorland gardens.

The city of Plymouth  to the south and the market town of Tavistock to the north are both around 20 minutes' drive from the hotel, and Drake's Trail -- a 21-mile walking and cycling that links the two towns -- is accessible a 5-minute drive away from the hotel.

The Daily Telegraph recommends a visit to Tavistock's 900-year-old pannier market -- open Tuesday-Saturday between 9am-4:30pm. Other local attractions include the picturesque Burrator Reservoir, where you can take a scenic 2-hour stroll around the shore, and the National Trust Buckland Abbey -- an 11th-century fprmer monastery whose previous occupants include the Cistercian monks, who also built the Grade-I listed Tithe Barn, and sea-farer and explorer Sir Francis Drake.

The hotel's AA-Rosette-awarded Wildflower Restaurant, which has views over Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley, focuses on British cuisine, including freshly caught fish and locally sourced produce.

Garden Rooms have views over the "delightful" gardens (The AA), and include free Wi-Fi, tea- and coffee-making facilities and a TV with Freeview. Dogs are welcome at an extra £10 per dog, per night, when booked in advance of your stay.

Previous stay was in room 112. Try to avoid this room, bed needs replacing. And room very small.

A great break, gorgeous position, lovely hotel. Food good. Our beds and pillows were uncomfortable, but maybe just unlucky to get old worn out ones.

Lovely staff, lovely food. Great value for money. The room was lovely, but not a comfortable bed - too soft, and the bath plug hole was full of hair which was a bit unpleasant.
