Overview
Don't be fooled by Brooklyn's location over the river from Manhattan -- the borough is booming, with sights, shops and entertainment to rival the more famous island. Nu Hotel in Brooklyn's downtown neighbors some of these fashionable areas.
Right outside, Smith Street and Court Street anchor the popular Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill neighborhoods. These thoroughfares have enough organic grocers, jewelry designers, and craft cocktail lounges to fill several afternoons and evenings of revelry. The adventurous can head about a mile south of the hotel toward the Gowanus Canal, one of the newest hipster hangout areas, with a rock-climbing gym, music venues, and an enormous Whole Foods with one of the city's largest rooftop farms.
The hotel is about six blocks northwest of the Barclays Center, a sinuous new sports arena popular with local celebrities. It's the home court for the Brooklyn Nets, but is perhaps more popular for the top-tier entertainment acts that perform here, from Beyonce to the MTV Video Music Awards. This area is also a local hub for the subway system. Nearly every train line has a stop within 5-10 blocks of the hotel, and the ride into Manhattan takes less than half an hour.
The hotel itself is cool, clean and minimalist. Mirroring the sleek condos that have sprouted in this neighborhood in the last few years, guest rooms are done up in white, with gentle neutral accent walls, eco-friendly cork floors, leather and chrome furnishings, and Egyptian cotton linens. A ground-floor tapas bar opens its walls to the street in warm weather, becoming a rather inviting sidewalk cafe.
- "Nu is all about Brooklyn, too. If it's made, packaged or bottled in Brooklyn, it can be had at the Nu" -- AAA
- "A spiffy 93-room hotel across the East River, convenient to more than a dozen subway lines but less expensive than comparable lodgings in Manhattan" -- The New York Times
