Flights & Car Deals
When looking for cheap flights, know that airlines tend to launch their sales on Tuesdays and end them on Thursdays, so don’t limit your searches to just the weekends. Additionally, airplanes are emptiest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, so that’s when many deals can be found.
Advertised fare sales generally target the next two or three months of travel and have 14- to 21-day advance purchase requirements. Sometimes the best fares are not advertised and can be found through online search engines, like Fly.ca. Many major Canadian cities have smaller airports nearby with discounted fares. If you are looking for flights to or from Toronto, try Hamilton International Airport, only an hour’s drive out of the city.
Changing your departure or return date by one day can save major cash. The biggest savings typically come with flying on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day. The exception is if you’re traveling over a three-day weekend like Labour Day, when everyone is looking to fly on the actual holiday, the perfect time to try and extend your vacation by a day.
Renting a car at your destination may be a requirement to get around or it may expand your vacation horizons beyond the immediate city limits. It is often nice to have your own transportation once arriving in a city, and it isn't difficult to find a cheap rental car deal.
Look for rental locations near, but not at, the airport. But if you are renting from a location that isn't located at an airport, be sure to check the company hours as many locations may be closed on Sundays. Because you can often find discounts on weekend car rentals, still consider these locations for Friday-Monday travel to get the weekend deals.
