LA: Festive Holiday Events Despite 80-Degree Temps

Dec 14, 2015
In Los Angeles, it may be too warm to wear a funny Christmas sweater, but you can still get into the holiday spirit with some of Los Angeles’ most festive offerings. Travelzoo and Google Local Guides have partnered up to share some holiday activities that you might not have known existed. Considering LA isn’t a true winter wonderland, with a little help from the magic of Hollywood, the activities below will have you convinced otherwise. As you read through this article, find out how you can win $300 toward your next Travelzoo Experience!

The Grove’s Giant Christmas Tree and Nightly Snowfall

Nothing kicks off the holiday season like the lighting of the 110-foot Christmas tree at the famous Grove shopping center in Fairfax. With nightly (fake) snowfall showers and kids waiting to take pictures with Santa Claus, what more do you need? Local Guide Juvi Guevara says “It’s truly like stepping into a wonderland.”

Reindeer Romp and Holiday Lights at the LA Zoo

If you have never seen a reindeer in real life, don’t miss the Reindeer Romp at the LA Zoo. This is the only place in Los Angeles to see live reindeer in their wintry village habitat. With thousands of LED lights installed, there are festive displays to see throughout the zoo and a great activity for the whole family!

The Chill at the Queen Mary

Built in 1936, the famous Queen Mary ship becomes a larger than life ice festival during the holidays. With temperatures as low as 9 degrees inside of the ice creations, it truly makes for an authentic winter experience for both kids and adults to enjoy. Don’t worry if you forget your jacket, parkas are provided for all of “chilly” activities including ice skating and ice tubing. Local Guide Laila Romero says “Chill is a wonderful way to spend the day with the kids. They’ll love it!”

Newport Beach Holiday Boat Parade

This year marks the 107th annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade which showcases beautifully decorated yachts, boats, and even canoes cruise down the harbor in front of thousands of spectators. There are only five nights in December to catch a sight of the dazzling lights and spectacular boats, so make sure to go down to Newport Beach for at least one of the nights!

Travelzoo Tip: Experience the parade first hand on the harbor from one of the many lighted boats with Travelzoo’s deal that even includes a drink!

LA Kings Holiday Ice at L.A. Live

Each year in December, the Los Angeles Kings hockey team brings their ice rink outdoors for some good old fashioned ice skating. “Awesome place to come out on a date. Especially during the winter when they have the ice skating rink setup!” (Local Guide, Andy Terzyan)
