Why We Love This Hotel

  • Formerly known as Lindors Country House Hotel, the property came under new ownership in 2018 as Dean Valley Manor
  • You can explore the hotel's nine acres of wooded gardens, which feature waterfalls and pools
  • Facilities include a heated indoor swimming pool and a restaurant that serves British dishes made using seasonal local produce

Overview

Built in the 1850s, Dean Valley Manor (formerly known as Lindors Country House Hotel) is in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean on the Welsh-English border.

The historic towns of Monmouth, known for its 13th-century gatehouse bridge, and Chepstow, home to the ruins of a Norman castle, are around 20 minutes' drive from the hotel. The edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a 40-minute drive away.

The Forest of Dean -- England's oldest oak forest -- is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth in The Lord of The Rings books, and was filmed for scenes in "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows".

The restaurant has views of the gardens and a seasonal menu that features dishes made using local produce. There is also a lounge bar that serves cream tea, drinks and nibbles, and has a log fire that you can cosy up in front of during colder months. In fine weather, you can enjoy a drink al fresco on the sun terrace.

The property has a heated indoor pool and nine acres of gardens to explore. It also has its own colony of bees, looked after by a local beekeeper, and you can buy the honey they produce.

Superior Rooms are larger than Standard Rooms and some have views of the lake or gardens.

Prosecco turned out to be Prosecco Frizzante which is definitely NOT Prosecco, as advertised. When I pointed this out, I was told it was what they call Prosecco! The dinner menu consisted mainly of burgers, and 1 salmon dish. No eggs at breakfast, chef wasn't there!

The swimming pool was really good, very clean, the staff at breakfast we're very cheerful also the breakfast was very good, I think the heating system may need some attention!! radiators in our room weren't particularly good, and after chatting to some other resedents or couple had no heating and no heater was provided so they bought there own!!!!

Lovely atmosphere, beautiful setting. Food really good. Friendly staff. Rooms a little tired but clean and comfortable. Problems with water pressure meant supply was intermittent. On reflection the price we paid more than offset these inconveniences

Great value for money, the meal was good and although the Prosecco looked like a very cheap bottle (screw top) it was very nice, however it was in our room on arrival not even chilled. I took it to reception and they were happy to put it in the fridge to have in the evening when we went for our meal. The grounds are very nice but it was a bit too boggy to go on any of the walks around the area, I think it would e nice to return in the summertime, but I doubt the same offers would be available.

The grounds were delightful with an abundance of streams and waterfalls. A beautiful looking house from the outside .

We asked for a double room with a bath but on arrival told you have to have what we give you , a twin room with a shower . The room was more like a dormitory than a hotel room and would urge you to remove this hotel from your list asap. We found the hotel cold throughout with threadbare carpets and peeling paper. The menu was very disappointing with options like ham egg and chips and three kinds of burgers. The bar had no draught beer or lager and was not staffed anyway so you had to ring a bell and hope somebody heard you . We would urge people not to come here until they have a major refurbishment.
