Overview

"Lovely valley views" (The AA) spread from The King's Head Inn, which offers traditional accommodation in the north of the Lake District, known for its "landscape of glistening water, dramatic valleys and picturesque stone-built villages" (Rough Guides).

With Helvellyn, England’s third highest peak, towering over it, the King's Head Inn occupies a whitewashed coaching inn, clad with greenery and dating from the 17th century, a short walk from the shores of Thirlmere. Both the market town of Keswick, "a natural base" (Fodor's) for exploring the surrounding area, and Castlerigg Stone Circle, "perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles" (English Heritage) are 10 minutes' drive away. Windermere takes around 30 minutes' to reach by car.

The King's Head Inn's quaint façade opens to a reception area with wood panelling, antique furnishing and a suit of armour. There's a bar serving real ale and malt whiskies, and old beams and an inglenook fireplace give a cosy feel. There is also a poolroom with a big-screen TV for sporting events, and a beer garden with picnic tables with views of the fells.

Decorated with richly patterned fabrics, the hotel's restaurant offers "excellent value food" (Condé Nast Traveller) and "looks out to the glacial valley of St Johns in the Vale" (The AA).

The hotel's 17 rooms are decorated in a country-house style with soft neutral tones and checked fabrics. All rooms have valley views, TVs, free Wi-Fi, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.

Staff were excellent, friendly and the hotel had a very welcoming atmosphere. Food was very good quality, breakfast excellent. Bar meals were good though on the pricey side. Great location and bus stops right outside for easy access north towards Keswick and south towards Grasmere and Ambleside; perfect for Helvellyn!
Other Comments
We thought the room was very small and limited for storage.

There was no glass of wine on arrival. The food was good and staff very helpful. I overheard that the hotel was getting a renovation so guessing this was reflected in the price,as bedroom was dated but clean.(definitely not a superior room as was stated)I would prefer for hotels not to use bedspreads as I’m sure they are not freshly laundered for every new guest. Overall a pleasant stay for the price.
