This luxe resort -- set in a quiet residential corner of the upscale Rancho Bernardo community -- offers a relaxing retreat of the country-club variety. City dwellers can escape downtown San Diego for a quick golf or spa getaway and be back in the city in 30 minutes.

Sitting on 265 acres, the AAA 4-Diamond Rancho Bernardo Inn is comprised of red-roofed Spanish Colonial-style buildings amid lush gardens, fountains and perfectly landscaped grounds. The resort is best known to locals for its championship 18-hole golf course and farm-to-table eats at AVANT Restaurant, a recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2018. Guests can also enjoy small bites, craft beers on tap and live music at the more casual Veranda Fireside Lounge & Restaurant.

There are three pools -- an adults-only pool, a family-friendly option and saline pool -- a sanctuary-like spa with cabanas and a rotating selection of organic treatments, plus a 24-hour fitness center on-site. Every room comes with a private balcony or patio, luxe linens and toiletries, custom artwork and warm, soothing décor.

San Diego's lengthy list of activities including Old-Town, SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and the Gaslamp Quarter are all within a 30-minute drive.  Bernardo Winery -- the oldest in Southern California -- is less than three miles away.

The grounds are beautiful and it's nice that there is an adults only pool.
Other Comments
The room we stayed in was much different than what was pictured. Our room was very dark and did not have a view. We were not offered "welcome drinks" at check in, room service barged into our room against the privacy sign and deadbolt on door to deliver an in-room amenity, which startled me as I was in the bathroom and not prepared for interaction with this person. Very annoying that you have to pay extra as a resort guest to use the spa pool. The pool was nearly empty but were told it would be an additional fee to use it. On top of the resort fee and room rate we were already paying. It feels like this hotel caters more to the local business (restaurant patrons, day spa guests, golfers, etc) than it does to the people who are actually staying overnight at the resort.

Excellent customer service which was to be expected.
Other Comments
Given a room next door to a family with 2 children that allowed their children to be out in the hallway crying in the very early hours of the morning. Found the children outside their room on the floor crying and crying and had to tell them to stop. Never heard the parents say a word to them. Another disappointment was to discover that the rooms were not very sound proof as expected. Able to hear every noisy guest in the hallway as that went to their rooms. Voiced concern with the front desk and told to ask for a corner room next visit. Having been told this, I'd probably visit this hotel again because of the atmosphere and ambiance.
