Doxford Hall Hotel & Spa is a 200-year-old mansion set in 10 acres of private estate in Northumberland, England's northernmost county.
Bamburgh, "Northumberland's most dramatic castle" (Lonely Planet), is around 20 minutes' drive from the hotel, while the Holy Island of Lindisfarne -- a tidal island off the northeast coast of England -- is around 30 minutes' drive away. The edge of the 400 square-mile Northumberland National Park is around 30 minutes' drive away.
The AA Hotel Guide 2019 praises the hotel's "luxuriously furnished" and "very attractive" interior. The entrance hall has an impressive carved-wood staircase, while the 2-AA-Rosette restaurant features ornate ceilings, chandeliers and a stone fireplace.
Spa and leisure facilities include a gym, an indoor swimming pool, two spa baths, a sauna and a steam room. Guests can relax in the Morning Room or in the Library, which has over 2000 books. Outside, the gardens include a yew-tree maze and a paved terrace where afternoon tea is served in fine weather.
Bedrooms are "light-filled, ridiculously large - even the so-called standard 'classic' - and handsomely furnished with carved bedsteads, wardrobes and dressing tables" (The Daily Telegraph). Standard Rooms (Classic and Coach House) are split between the main house and the coach house, a short walk away. Executive Rooms are in the main house. Wi-Fi is free.

The only minor comment I’d like to say about the hotel was the time we had to wait for our food during our evening meal. It was a good half hour between courses - way too long.

It was very dog friendly, beautiful setting, lovely area, gorgeous large room, delicious dinner. The place is very well maintained and very clean. Friendly bar and reception staff.
Other Comments
Felt like they needed more staff at the start of dinner service & at breakfast. The library was the only dog friendly communal area and it could have done with staff checking if any drinks were required and additional tables. A floor lamp in the room would have been useful.

Better to book a table half an hour earlier than planning to eat, as there can be a 40 minute or so wait between making an order and going through to the table. The food is superb though

The room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel was impressive with lovely grounds, although the maze was a bit soggy underfoot at this time of year. Wish we'd been there longer to take advantage of the library. The staff were all helpful and pleasant and the food was first rate.

Small point but breakfast cereal bowls weren’t cleared away before main course served. We had to pile them up and put on nearby ledge. Request for milk had to be made twice. Allocated ‘disabled ‘ room so wash basins very low . None of us liked the bar— colour scheme / lighting were at odds with the lovely ambience elsewhere. Disappointing as we loved general ambience of other rooms.

The only thing we didn't like was the adds on on both the breakfast and evening menu. The waitress actually explained that the veg served with dinner was a garnish and we would need to order extra vegetables. We also don't see why the smoked salmon and scrambled egg and the eggs benedict needed such a hefty supplement. The meals and breakfast were lovely but the service was very slow.

Quality of the evening meal from canapés in the lounge to desserts in the dining room were excellent.

Went in January when it was cold. Our room was freezing. Radiator behind the curtains which prevented heat getting into the room-on request staff provided two standalone radiators. On the first night the dining room was cold as the radiators were not on. Not sure if they were not working or the hotel was economising.

We have been several times and we’re always impressed with staff but this time we found a couple of the staff complacent ( very unusual) and prosecco on arrival was part of our package . We had to ask for it several hours later when it hadn’t arrived . Are standards beginning to slip - I hope not

The room was great for one that allowed dogs and the hotel allowed dogs in all public areas unless people were eating. The spa was a comfortable area.

The restaurant was what let this hotel down. We ordered John Dory fish and the sliver of fish was so small that my husband had to point out that it had slipped under my tender stem broccoli!! His was equally small. The side of rosemary and sea salt chips tasted burnt but was under cooked with no hint of either rosemary or sea salt. No one stayed at or around the table long enough for us to complain until it was too late anyway. Also why serve an appetiser of black pudding and goats cheese when the waitress the next morning said about the breakfast ‘no one wants the poor black pudding!’ The charge for extras above the allowance was all over the place. They forgot the wine charge but when we realised and were about to tell them on check out-we realised that the price was right anyway because they had overcharged for extra items above the allowance on the evening meal. Much better to be upfront! Also the cooked breakfast was cold. By then we felt we had complained enough about the chips which stayed on the bill -not to mention the yapping Yorkshire terrier that tried to attack our dog.(which we never mentioned). We also got stuck in the steam room which was very scary but fortunately my husband is pretty strong!! Overall though this was a super dog friendly hotel with lots of grounds and very (dog) friendly
staff and we would recommend. Just be careful on your dinner choice because in general the quality is excellent!!
