The Blackburn Inn sits in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley in Staunton, a picturesque town known for the arts and full of history. The property just opened this spring as a boutique hotel, originally built in 1828 by Thomas Jefferson's protege, Thomas R. Blackburn.

The inn offers a classic American look with red bricks, whitewashed wood trims and light-filled hallways; however, rooms here are modern in style and very spacious. Bathrooms on the other hand are beautifully designed with barn-style doors and rain showers. Select rooms even offer soaking bathtubs. Rooms feature mobile key access, free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers and minifridges.

The Blackburn Inn has one on-site restaurant, Second Draft, which features locally sourced dishes and some of Virginia's best wines, beers and ciders. On good weather days, guests can enjoy bites and drinks from the property's large wraparound front porch. Take the spiral staircase up to the rooftop cupola for breathtaking views of the grounds and downtown Staunton.

The city of Staunton, birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, is a charming small town but with a big arts culture. Once a year in August, some of the most talented musicians from the U.S. and Europe come together for the Staunton Music Festival in Virginia. Guests looking to explore further can take part in the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, all located within an easy hour's drive from one another.

I would not recommend this hotel who has trouble getting around. The hotel is on a hill and you are walking up to the door. For most people this would not be a problem, for older people it might be.

The daily breakfast, which included fresh baked pastries from a local bakery, and seating outdoors on the very large balcony overlooking the lawn. Also, the bathroom in the room was very nice. Staff was incredibly nice and helpful.

The staff, who were always very attentive and courteous. On our first morning, we complained about our lack of sleep due to the light and the noise. By the afternoon, they had installed a room darkening shade over the window, which was impressive. I guess there was nothing they could do about the cricket, and if anything, it was even louder the next night (though we had a dark room at least). the property has a lot of southern charm, and there is a spooky element to some of the other buildings on the property, being an abandoned psychiatric complex (for those into that sort of thing -- might be a turn-off for others). The hotel property itself is very well-maintained and nicely landscaped. We like that we were able to bring our golden retriever puppy. Nice location as a base for exploring area wineries and the town. Getting back to the staff, when we posted videos on FB showing how loud the cricket was and complained again at 2:30 am on our second night, we were comped the entire stay by the GM, Lacey. I had to give 5 stars for value after that! Travelzoo asked if we enjoyed our stay, and I had to say no because of our lack of sleep. We would definitely give Blackburn Inn a second chance. It just opened, and growing pains are to be expected.

The room. Room 100. Maybe it was haunted. First of all, we could not get the temperature below feeling tepid, despite setting the thermostat to its lowest setting (64 degrees, I believe). There is a transom window over the door, and bright lights in the corridor. It felt like we were sleeping with the lights on. This was remedied the second night. Then there was the cricket. The. CRICKET!! It must have been in the duct work. It chirped loudly all night, both nights. I did not care for the exercise facility, which is about 1/8 mile up the hill in a different building. There are neither water nor towels in the room. It has a decent cross trainer/elliptical, a treadmill, and a cycle. The weight set looked like it was non-functional. Hope they can get a decent facility in the hotel proper eventually.
