Why We Love This Hotel

  • Charming historic property with original grand arched doorways and a winding staircase
  • Breathtaking views of the grounds and downtown from the rooftop cupola
  • The building was originally constructed by Thomas Jefferson protégé Thomas R. Blackburn in 1828
  • Complimentary sparkling wine at check-in and light European breakfast
  • Close to downtown Staunton, which Conde Nast Traveler listed as one of the "3 Best Day Trips from Washington, D.C."

Overview

The Blackburn Inn sits in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, in historical Staunton. The property, built in 1828 by Thomas Jefferson protégé Thomas R. Blackburn, still features original architectural elements such as arched doorways, vaulted ceilings and fireplaces in select guest rooms.

The inn offers a classic American look with red brick, whitewashed wood trim and light-filled hallways; however, rooms are modern in style and very spacious. Bathrooms are beautifully appointed with barn-style doors and rain showers. Select rooms offer soaking bathtubs. All rooms feature mobile-key access, Wi-Fi, coffeemakers and mini-fridges. A light European breakfast is complimentary, as is a glass of sparkling wine upon check-in.

The on-site restaurant, Second Draft, features locally sourced dishes and some of Virginia's best wines, beers and ciders. On good-weather days, guests can enjoy bites and drinks from the property's large wraparound front porch, or take the spiral staircase up to the rooftop cupola for breathtaking views of the grounds and downtown Staunton.

The city of Staunton, birthplace of President Woodrow Wilson, is a charming small town with a big arts culture. Be sure to stroll through the in-house art gallery, which showcases the works of local artists. Guests looking to sample some of Virginia's best microbrews can explore the breweries along the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, many located within an hour's drive of the inn. Guests also have access to the full-service fitness center. This hotel offers dog-friendly rooms and treats your furry friends to complimentary bowls, beds and treats.

It was an overall good value for such a distinctive property. All the staff was friendly and helpful. It was a good location near the downtown area.
Other Comments
While it was a good value, they still have several kinks to work out and I would only go back and stay there again with a different room. My suite was lovely, but was on the end front corner. I had traffic sounds on two sides and railroad tracks on one side. The room has the original single pane windows and bare wood floors, so there was not much to limit the outside noise. The room itself was spacious and well decorated with several amenities. I went to the Bistro for a light dinner around 7 and I was the only customer. They did not have two of the items listed on the limited menu. The item I ordered was good and the friendly server also pointed out free fruit I could take back to the room.. The expanded continental breakfast the next morning was nice and the pastries were delicious. However, the area ran out of plates, and a customer had to run someone down to get some. I hope they are able to work these minor kinks out, since it is a lovely property and they do have a charming staff.

I think that if a nice large thick rug under the bed would help cut down on the noise we make in the room and surrounding rooms. I would also try to fix the doorway. I did not like that there was a halo of light coming from the door. It felt like we didn't have as much privacy.
Other Comments
You can hear everything around you such as people walking around, talking and showering. There was also light coming from the hallway all around the door to our room. The room looked very nice however the room echoed and the floor made a creaking noise.

It was very relaxing, which is what we were after, and they accommodate dogs, so our corgi could stay with us. Staff was very welcoming of us and our dog.
Other Comments
Staff were pleasant and responded quickly to any request but this is a low volume time in the area so hard to keep everything at peak performance when fewer staff available.

The architecture of the building and how elegant it is
Other Comments
The place was great, we booked 2 nights New years eve and the first , the walls are old concrete so although there were people parting next door our room was quiet. The Staff was very nice and breakfast was good. The renovation of the building is great and everything is very elegant. We had dinner at their restaurant and there were no to many selections ,we wish that such a nice place had better restaurant with more options and bigger.
