Overview

Chicheley Hall is an English country house built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. It was bought by the Royal Society and now also serves as the Kavli Royal Society International Centre, a facility dedicated to the advancement of science.

The property has original period features, ornate chandeliers, grand staircases and a great hall that was used in the filming of "Pride and Prejudice".

The restaurant serves classic British and European dishes. Afternoon tea can be served in the garden (weather permitting).

Milton Keynes is less than 10 minutes away by car. This famous new town turned 50 in 2017 -- you can visit its plethora of restaurants and bars, or search for the Concrete Cows, iconic sculptures created by Canadian artist Liz Leyh.

Woburn Safari Park, a wildlife park with over 1000 animals including elephants, tigers and black bears, is approximately 15 minutes' drive away.

In need of a little TLC the gardens have been neglected and could be so much better if they had a few seats around the lake to relax on. The hotel gives the impression that it is facing hard times, the selection of wines with the meal was limited and the bar area is so bare and uninviting for a pre dinner drink. All said however the overall value of the deal was good.

We are interested in architecture and history. We loved this Grade 1 listed property and would like to learn more about it. Further research in some spare time soon. Bonus was the family church alongside the hotel which we were able to look inside. Very pleasant rural setting with ample car parking and somewhere to take a stroll. Alas the drought and Canada Geese have left the large lawn covered in excrement like I have never seen before. Don't take your eyes off the ground in front of you folks.

The comfort and cleanliness of our room was very good; food was very good with lovely waiting staff at dinner and at breakfast; the staff were friendly and helpful and the reception lady was particularly thoughtful regarding the "afternoon tea" included in our stay. We had arrived too late to manage the tea - - which was more substantial than we realised - and also our dinner. We said it was OK we'd give it a miss thankyou, but upon some discussion we agreed that if some sandwiches could be provided the following day when we checked out we'd be more than happy. Later when we unpacked our sandwiches we were most impressed. They were lovely and I only wish that the chef could be thanked on our behalf for such a wonderful gesture. The downside was an overly hot room - all night - impossible to cool down and the particularly noisy floorboards in the room next door. The guest/s staying there were keen walkers apparently. I didn't realise so much walking could be done is such a small hotel room late into the evening and again very early in the morning. Thankfully they rested during the wee small hours. We do understand the characteristics of such old buildings but one night in Rotblat room was enough. In every other way the room was charming, comfortable and clean, providing us with everything we MAY have needed - like the iron / safe / luggage rack / hairdryer. However, I don't think we'd stay in this block of the hotel in future.

Afternoon tea on the lawn, plus dinner and breakfast were excellent. A great value break.

The Wilkins room is very small. It really needs a smaller desk so the bed can be moved away from the wall - or turned into a single room.

The building itself is lovely and so interesting, and the grounds are gorgeous. The afternoon tea was great - probably the best thing about our stay!

The room - for "guest room" read "student accommodation". The room was quite small with absolutely no atmosphere at all without a single feminine touch. The bathroom was a disabled one, but not a pleasant experience. I know we had a very good deal, but I did expect something a little more in keeping with the Hall itself. The bar was also disappointing - two chairs and a sofa and completely tasteless and devoid of atmosphere. The staff were as helpful as they could be but, wanting a glass of dry white wine (I dislike Chardonnay unless it costs serious money!) both the first two choices were out of stock! Dinner was fine - if, again lacking imagination, but the breakfast (of the buffet variety) had no fruit or yoghurt and the cooked food was luke-warm.

Very limited menu choice for dinner. We were in south wing, separate accommodation, quite lot of stairs to climb, if we needed lift that was in main house but you had to upgrade by £30.00 night.
