Beamish Park Hotel is a family-run hotel on the border of Newcastle and County Durham.
It is set in the tranquil surroundings of Beamish Valley, yet within easy reach of city-centre shops and nightlife. The property is 20 minutes' drive from Newcastle upon Tyne -- a "party town turned cultural hub" (The Independent) -- and 25 minutes' drive from the cathedral city of Durham.
The open-air Beamish Museum, where you can learn about life in the North East of England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s, is less than 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. There is a golf academy next to the hotel that has a driving range, practice greens and a 9-hole par-3 course (fees apply).
Northumberland National Park -- "405 sq miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet) where "the landscape is dotted with prehistoric remains and fortified houses" -- is less than an hour's drive from the hotel. The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the second largest AONB in England at 770 square miles, is around 30 minutes' drive away.
For a casual drink or a light bite to eat, the hotel has an informal lounge with a bar. The modern bistro uses local and seasonal produce -- expect dishes like harissa salmon, Asian pork belly and wild mushroom macaroni. It also serves traditional afternoon tea and Sunday roasts.
Executive Rooms feature a super king-size bed and an ensuite with a bath or a walk-in shower. Wi-Fi is free.

We thought the room would have benefited from the option to have a brighter light. The subtle mood lighting was very relaxing but not much help when we were trying to find something! The same comment applies to the bathroom lighting which was too subtle for shaving & using contact lenses.

Facilities for dog owners. Great rooms with patio doors to let dog out in morning etc. Also being able to park outside room made unloading luggage easy.
