THE FONTENAY combines modern luxury and a unique waterside setting, within easy reach of Hamburg’s historic sights. Set on the shores of the Alster lake, known for its “celebrated vistas” (Fodor’s), this cosmopolitan hotel occupies a striking contemporary building formed from three interlinking circles and surrounded by greenery. The Museum of Ethnology is a 10-minute walk away, whilst both the sprawling art museum Hamburger Kunsthalle and Planten un Blomen gardens, offering “a fairytale landscape and floral bonanza” (Lonely Planet) are 20 minutes’ walk away. Speicherstadt, Hamburg’s distinctive warehouse complex and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes around 30 minutes to reach on foot, whilst the landmark Elbphilharmonie concert hall is around a 15-minute taxi ride from the hotel.
The innovative sculptural exterior of THE FONTENAY opens to equally dramatic public spaces, which include a 27-metre-high atrium lounge with LED-fitted glass panels that create changing light patterns. There’s a chic white-and-grey-toned restaurant where floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the lake, as well as a relaxed, light-flooded eatery with parquet floors and a lake-view summer terrace, and a smart bar for cocktails. Guests can relax in the rooftop spa, which houses an indoor/outdoor infinity pool, a sauna and a steam room, and offers a range of beauty treatments (fees may apply).
THE FONTENAY’s emphasis on light continues throughout the hotel’s guestrooms, which feature curved walls and floor-length windows looking out onto the lake. Decor is elegant and modern in hues of soft blues and beiges, and finished with parquet floors, Danish-design artefacts and original Peruvian artwork. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, TVs, minibars and coffee machines, plus sitting areas and natural stone bathrooms with heated floors. Higher tariff rooms add balconies, whilst 1- and 2-bedroom suites have living rooms and dining areas, and include complimentary breakfast. The hotel’s top-level quarters come with details such as grand pianos, kitchens and double balconies. Room service is available 24 hours.
