Harvey's Point Hotel
Why We Love This Hotel
- This lakeside hotel has “the ambience of an exclusive getaway” (Frommer’s)
- It’s set in “calm seclusion” (The Daily Telegraph), a 10-minute drive from Donegal Town
- The restaurant offers a “real touch of drama” (The Daily Telegraph) and has “consistently high standards” (The AA)
- “Splendid views of the lake and surrounding hills” (The Daily Telegraph) spread from the “very comfortable” (Frommer’s) guestrooms
The Blue Stack Mountains surround “spirit-lifting” (Fodor’s) Harvey’s Point, which offers “the finest in cooking and accommodation” (The Daily Telegraph) in a “remote and breathtaking location” (Fodor’s). Set amid landscaped gardens on the shores of “island-sprinkled” (The Daily Telegraph) Lough Eske, this “family-run, welcoming hotel” (The AA) occupies a “modern, gleaming property” (The Daily Telegraph) and a courtyard annexe, about a 10-minute drive from Donegal Town, known for its castle, and craft and tweed shops. Donegal Railway Heritage Centre is about 15 minutes’ drive away, whilst both Donegal Golf Club and sandy Murvagh Beach take around 20 minutes to reach by car. Glenveagh National Park and Castle, whose setting includes “woodlands, herds of red deer, alpine gardens, a crystal clear lake, and the highest mountain in Donegal” is approximately 70 minutes’ drive from the hotel.
The “cosy and intimate” interiors at Harvey’s Point offer “superb lake views (The Daily Telegraph), and include reception areas that “gleam with cherrywood and polished stone” (Fodor’s), and walls hung “with all manner of paintings and artwork” (The Daily Telegraph). There’s a “spacious, beautifully lit” (The Daily Telegraph) restaurant serving “rich meals with exquisite views of the lake” and an “absolutely decadent” afternoon tea, as well as more informal dining at the funky octagonal bar, which has “the feel of a private club” (Frommer’s), offers a wide selection of gin and whiskey, and opens onto a lakeside terrace. Breakfast is complimentary.
“Particularly spacious” (The AA) suites are spread between the main hotel and the annexe and are decorated in an opulent, traditional style with rich fabrics and antique-inspired furnishings. All include free Wi-Fi, TVs and minibars, along with king-sized beds, sitting areas, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Higher tariff rooms add details such as lake views, whirlpool bathtubs, dressing rooms and 4-poster beds, whilst the hotel’s penthouse suites have separate living rooms, double Jacuzzis bathtubs and private bars. Lakeside suites “offer beautifully appointed homes from home” and feature verandas overlooking the lake; some also have 4-poster beds and dining space.
