"People have been visiting this establishment for over 200 years and it has become a landmark that dominates the market square," says The AA of the Black Swan, a 4-star hotel in the pretty North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley.
The hotel is in a "peerless location", according to The Daily Telegraph, "presiding over the market place of one of North Yorkshire’s most attractive market towns". It's surrounded by quaint little boutiques and bookshops, as well as butchers, bakeries and delis. There are charming tearooms and cosy pubs, with the dramatic ruins of Helmsley Castle overlooking the town.
Surrounded by the North Yorkshire countryside, the town is a great spot for ramblers. There are 1400 miles of country paths and tracks around Ryedale, so whether you're looking for a gentle stroll, a day-long walk or a hardcore hike, you're sure to find something suitable right on the doorstep.
Duncombe Park, the only stately home in the North York Moors National Park, is less than a mile away. It is home to the National Centre for Birds of Prey and offers landscaped gardens, 400 acres of parkland to explore, a nature reserve and the Helmsley Walled Gardens. The city of York, with its cathedral, cobbled streets, shops and museums, is a 30-minute drive away and Rievaulx Abbey is a 1-hour drive.
The Black Swan dates back to the 15th century and retains much of its historic charm while offering plenty of contemporary comforts. The AA Hotel Guide 2018 praises the "stylish" bedrooms, which all have thick, snug duvets, warm, homely furnishings, luxe toiletries, Freeview flatscreen TVs, and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
The hotel has a quaint tearoom and an in-house patisserie that are open daily, serving homemade delights. You can also enjoy tea -- or something a little stronger -- in the pretty walled garden in warmer months.
The AA says that "dinner in the award-winning restaurant is the highlight of any stay". The fine-dining Gallery Restaurant serves top-notch seasonal fare, using ingredients that are mostly sourced within 30 miles of the hotel. The Cygnet Bar has an extensive wine list and selection of cocktails, and is a chic spot to enjoy a pre- or post-dinner drink.
In 2015, the property won no fewer than three separate Hotel of the Year awards -- the Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards, the White Rose Awards and the Visit York Tourism Awards.
