The New Bath Hotel and Spa in Matlock Bath is within easy reach of the Peak District and its walking and cycling trails. Set in leafy grounds on a winding road, the hotel occupies an 18th-century mansion and offers "a lesson in tasteful design" (Condé Nast Johansens). It's a short walk from the picturesque River Derwent, 15 minutes' walk from Matlock Bath and a 10-minute drive from the larger Derbyshire town of Matlock.
The Heights of Abraham -- a hilltop park that offers tours of its underground cavern system, and is accessed by cable car -- is 15 minutes' walk away, while Lea Gardens, with its renowned display of rhododendrons, is a 10-minute drive. Chatsworth House and Buxton, a spa town with "flamboyant Georgian architecture" (Lonely Planet), both take around 35 minutes to reach by car.
Guests can pick at light bites and take afternoon tea in the hotel's lobby lounge with its floor-to-ceiling windows, pick from a range of martinis in the bar -- which overlooks dramatic Derwent Gorge -- and sample sustainably caught fish in the restaurant. The spa has a relaxation room, a hot tub with thermal spring water, a steam room and a sauna (extra fees apply).
Bedrooms have a muted, sophisticated style. Higher-tariff rooms add sitting areas and some have bay windows. Family rooms sleep up to four people. Wi-Fi is free.
Note: The indoor swimming pool is closed until December, 2017, and the outdoor pool is closed indefinitely.
